The aristocratic--if not haughty--Roderick was nevertheless consistently in the Top 1000, reaching as high as Number 221 in 1967, when it was not uncommon to run into a Rod or a Roddy. It's at a low point right now, but we can envision it being revived as a neglected, dignified grandpa name, perhaps when Rod is no longer a potentially embarrassing nickname..
 Roderick has lots of literary history, including the novels Roderick Random by Tobias Smollett and Roderick Hudson by Henry James, and Roderick Usher is the main character in the Edgar Allan Poe short story "The Fall of the House of Usher." Roderick, of course, is the full name of Rod Stewart, and TV personality Rosie Pope called her son James Roderick.

This form of Theodoric, familiar via Marlene, is a possible German import. It is an Anglicized ancestor of Derek and all its variations. A noted bearer was acclaimed classical German baritone and conductor Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, and there have been Dietrichs in Henry James's The Princess Casamassima,/em and more recently on the TV show Psych.
