Móeiður

A medieval German saint's name which remained popular in Germany until the middle of the 20th century. It is still in relatively wide use in other European countries, including Poland and Hungary. With other Bert names – like Robert and Albert and even Gilbert – appealing to lovers of strong, traditional boy names with a slightly clunky charm, Norbert could be one of those so-out-it's-in choices that everyone knows, but almost no one is using.

A famous fictional Norbert is the baby dragon adopted by Hagrid in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

A feminine form of Ethelbert, which is itself the Middle English variant of Æþelbeorht, which is in turn the Old English version of Albert, Ethelberta could therefore be regarded as an alternative form of Alberta.

Ethelberta certainly has plenty of clunkiness but nicknames Effie, Bertie, Birdie or Ella might lighten it.

Ethelberta appears in Thomas Hardy's (surprisingly comic and happy) novel, The Hand of Ethelberta, about a woman of humble origins who marries well, loses her husband, and becomes a poet and story teller, all while trying to support and conceal her working class family.

Albertus is the Latin form of Albert, a masculine name derived from the Germanic elements 'adal' (noble) and 'beraht' (bright), thus meaning 'noble and bright' or 'nobly famous.' This classical form was widely used throughout medieval Europe, particularly among scholars, clergy, and nobility.

The name carries historical weight through figures like Albertus Magnus, the 13th-century German philosopher and theologian. While the shortened form Albert became more common in most English-speaking countries, Albertus retained popularity in Latin-influenced contexts and in parts of Northern Europe, especially the Netherlands.

The name conveys a sense of timeless dignity and intellectual tradition. Today, it appeals primarily to parents seeking a name with classical roots and substantial historical depth rather than contemporary popularity.
