UK Baby Names

Like Ashley before it, on-trend Everly has been followed by a range of spelling variants, and among them, Everleigh is the most popular.
Opinions are divided as to whether the "-leigh" ending makes the name more distinctive, contemporary, and stand-out, or whether it just looks clunky and more complicated, but enough parents prefer that it has joined Everly in the US Top 100.
Given to nearly 3000 girls every year, Everleigh derives from an Old English place name, meaning "wild boar in a woodland clearing."
Actor Cam Gigandet, who starred in "The O.C." and "Reckless" was ahead of the trend when he used Eveleigh for his daughter in 2009, but it took Channing Tatum naming his daughter Everly in 2013 for Everleigh to gain any real traction.
Following in Everly’s footsteps, it did climb the charts, and its popularity was perhaps boosted by the YouTubers, the LaBrants, and their daughter Everleigh.
Rising up the charts in Canada and the UK, Everleigh is now a familiar and well-established spelling option for the name.
Though it is only just in the Top 100 and nowhere near as popular as Olivia or Emma, it is worth remembering that when all the Everly variations are put together, it starts to feel more like a Top 20 name, in line with Harper or Sofia.
So if you do love Everleigh but were aiming to be a bit more unique by choosing this spelling, you could consider the alternatives: Elowen, Waverly, Leighton, Oakley, Haven, or Keeley.

A strong single-syllable surname with a joyful meaning, Tate is finding a place on more and more birth certificates.
Former Spice Girl Emma Bunton named her second son Tate Lee.
Tate also has a cultural vibe via the Tate and Tate Modern museums in London, named for philanthropist Henry Tate. Actor Tate Donovan is a prominent current bearer.

Alora combines a number of stylish elements: the pretty Al- beginning of Alice, Alessia, and Alma, the -ora ending of Aurora, Elora, and Nora, and a multicultural feel, owing to its various origins. A Top 250 name in the US and in England and Wales, around 1370 American babies received the name in a recent year.

The name likely emerged as a spelling variation of Elora, which in turn is a pop culture choice, used in the 1988 movie Willow. As an invented name, it possibly drew inspiration from the Hebrew Eliora, the Latinate Eleanora, the Greek Elara, and the Persian Alara. There's also the Italian word allora, meaning "so, then, therefore, well", the name Allura meaning "alure", and the possibility that it's a compound name of Alice and Laura.

Given all these potential roots, Alora holds wide appeal as a contemporary choice with multiple links to history and mythology, and as an alternative to more classic options like Laura, Lara, and Alma.

Knox is an old Scottish surname that Brad Pitt (whose great-great-grandfather was named Hal Knox Hillhouse) and Angelina Jolie took out of the back cupboard, dusted off, and elevated to coolness--to the point where it entered the popular baby names list in 2009. Knox now ranks among the most influential celebrity baby names.
With Knox, the Jolie-Pitts established their own tradition: instead of their sons bearing the same first inital, they share the final letter 'x'--Maddox, Pax and Knox-- as well as a final 'n' for their middle names. It's celebrity shine has made the formerly obscure Knox one of the most popular Scottish names for boys.
The surname Knox dates back at least to the thirteenth century, and John Knox was the priest who brought about the Reformation in Scotland.

The recent ascent of this English surname is due to two things: the megapopular Ash beginning and TV/movie hottie Ashton Kutcher. The name peaked at Number 76 in 2004, a year after Ashton Kutcher's (both Christopher Ashton) hit TV show Punk'd made its debut.

Though greatly overshadowed by the trendy Olivia, Olive has a quiet, subtle appeal of its own -- and is now enjoying a remarkable comeback. Olive is one of only four girl names starting with O on the US Top 1000. Cool couple Isla Fisher and Sacha Baron Cohen chose it for their daughter, reviving the name to stylishness, and now Drew Barrymore has a little Olive too, as has country singer Jake Owen.
Olive has positive associations to the olive branch as a symbol of peace and the ancient olive wreath that celebrated success.
Olive was the name of the adorable Abigail Breslin character in the popular movie Little Miss Sunshine. Olive Chancellor is a major character in Henry James's The Bostonians and Olive Kitteridge is a Pulitzer Prize-winning Elizabeth Strout novel that was adapted into a TV miniseries in 2014. Kids might be familiar with Olive the Other Reindeer.
Olive came into fashion at the end of the nineteenth century along with other botanical names, when it had a run in the Top 100.

Peyton is a unisex surname that rose to fame in the 90s, with parents drawing inspiration from football star, Peyton Manning, and, oddly enough, from "Peyton Flanders", the villainess of the 1992 film, The Hand That Rocks The Cradle. Combining gentle sounds with contemporary style and the naughtiness of Peyton Place, the name remains a popular choice in the US today.
Derived from an English place name, Peyton could mean "Pæga's town" or "fighting man's estate", though other sources associate it with Patton and Patrick, giving it the meaning "nobleman's town". In tune with Avery, Paisley, and Harper - and an updated honor for Grandpa Patrick or Aunt Patricia - Peyton is in the US Top 200 and given to nearly 2000 girls every year.

Obscure until the 90s, solidly unisex in the early 2000s, a feminine-leaning, Top 100 choice in the 2010s, and now seemingly in decline, Peyton has had a turbulent time in the charts over the last three decades.
Whether it continues to fall or rise back up remains to be seen, but for now, it still feels like a familiar option, with namesakes ranging from the literary Peyton Loftis to the actress Peyton Roi List.

Caden is a key member of the rhyming contingent that includes Aiden, Jayden, Kayden, Brayden et al. It may derive from the Celtic Cadan or Irish Cathán, both from the same root meaning "battle". It is also possible it comes from Cade, meaning "round" or "barrel".

While Caden in this spelling achieves the golden mean of being familiar but not overly popular, ranking consistently in the middle of the Top 1000, there are so many similar names in widespread use that you're sure to hear it more than you might think.

Considering all the spellings together, Caden (and Kayden and Kaiden and Cayden) ranks Number 13 in the US, according to our Playground Analysis.
A recent study of names by political party affiliation found that nearly 80 percent of the voters named Caden are Republicans.

Tatum is one of the rare examples of a name that was exclusively female, as in Tatum O'Neal, but now is used for boys too, entering the male Top 1000 in 2010. Khloe Kardashian made headlines when she revealed her son is named Tatum Robert, breaking from the family theme of using unique word names for their children.

Jazz legend Art Tatum and actor Channing Tatum are two notable male bearers, albeit as a surname. Country singer Luke Bryan has a son Tatum Christopher, called Tate. We also recommend the cool and crisp Tate as a standalone name.

Chosen for their first son by musical couple Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale, this Jamaican place and elegant British surname also boasts the more regal yet user-friendly short form, King.
Kingston offers clear evidence of the starbaby effect: it arrived on the popularity list in 2006, the year little Kingston Rossdale was born, and has risen since.

Kingston

Popular pop name, inspired by Australian singer Kylie Minogue. It was at its height in Australia in the 1970s and early 80s; often cited as a Noongar name meaning "boomerang".

Kylie has also been used as a feminine form of the Scottish name Kyle. The youngest Kardashian sister, Kylie Jenner, is undoubtedly keeping its style going.

Camden is a surprise hit, probably as a result of some star baby cred: it has been chosen by no less than four celebrity parents since 2012. Gentle but not flimsy, Camden could be an updated spin on Cameron, Callum, or Caden.
Currently in the Top 200 in the US, and used on more than 2000 boys each year, Camden evokes the hip open-air market in London or the city in New Jersey. Plus, while it may feel purely contemporary, Camden has two classic literary ties: Camden Farebrother is a character in George Eliot's 19th century novel, Middlemarch, while Camden House features in Arthur Conan Doyle's piece, "The Adventure of the Empty House", part of his Sherlock writings.

Riley — one of the most popular unisex names — is trendier now for girls though for boys it's a classic, ALWAYS ranking in the US Top 1000.

In fact, after a decade of softening, Riley has recently taken a turn upward for boys, along with a lot of other gender-neutral names. These days, parents are embracing unisex names just as enthusiastically for their sons than for their daughters.

A popular choice in England and Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and Australia, it may be considered an Irish name, meaning "descendant of Raghallach", a given name of unknown meaning, though some associate it with courage and hardiness. Alternatively, it could be an English topological name, meaning "rye clearing".

There are lots of athletes and other notable real-life namesakes for a boy named Riley, as well as fictional ones in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Twilight: Eclipse. And Riley can easily be shortened for a boy to Ry or Lee.

Adaline rocketed onto the Top 1000 for the first time since 1924 in 2015 at a whopping Number 364 — an astonishing debut. Though similar names, such as Adeline, Adelyn and Ada, have been growing steadily for years, the meteoric rise of this once-unusual spelling is no doubt due to Blake Lively-starring movie "The Age of Adaline," about a woman who stops aging at the age of 29.

Adaline

Bailey — a jaunty surname — was first used for a female TV character in 1978 in the show WKRP in Cincinnaati, then caught on big time. Bailey's still an appealing choice, though, and a celebrity fave. Parents of daughters named Bailey include Scot Baio and Stella McCartney.

Maddox, a previously obscure Welsh family name with a powerfully masculine image, suddenly came into the spotlight when Angelina Jolie chose it for her son in 2003. By the following year it was in the middle of the Top 1000, and it has risen since.
It was Maddox who set the precedent for all the boys in the Jolie-Pitt clan to have names ending in 'x'-and helped fuel the spark for all names X.
Maddox is related to the traditional Welsh Madoc (pronounced MAH-dog), meaning 'fortunate'; it belonged to a bearer who, according to legend, colonized North America in the twelfth century.
Maddox is a character in The Vampire Diaries; spelled Madox, it appeared in Michael Ondaatje's The English Patient.

A growing number of high-profile (and other) parents are choosing to honor their musical idols, such as Hendrix, Presley, Jagger, and now Lennon, an Irish name for girls as well as boys with a wonderful meaning on many levels. Lennon first came to notice when Liam Gallagher and Patsy Kensit used it for their son in 1999, and singer-musician Adam Pascal followed their lead two years later.
Most recently, YouTube sensation and star of the hit television show Nashville, Lennon Stella, can be credited for this name's spike in popularity among girls. This may be why it entered the US Top 1000 for the first time in 2013.

Used by parents who love that Z initial, Zayden is also part of the Rhymes-with-Aiden-Clan. This particular for form ranks in the US Top 300 and the UK Top 600, outranking spelling variations Zaiden and Zaden.

While the name is generally considered a blending of popular sounds, it might also be viewed as a variation on the Arabic Zaydan, which means "growth, increase". In this case, it would be pronounced zie-DAN (though like with Zayn, it might be pronounced zay-DAN too).

Singer Tori Kelly named her son Zayden Michael in 2025, while Xaden is a rising spelling variant, gaining in popularity due to its appearance in the book series, Fourth Wing.

Bentley, a somewhat stuffy British surname, previously associated primarily with an incredibly expensive English car, has had a recent surge in popularity, thanks largely to the reality TV shows 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom, with Bentley being the name of the son of breakout star Maci (another new favorite) Bookout.

One of the most appealing of the newly hip occupational names, evoking sweet smells emanating from the oven. Much fresher sounding than than others that have been around for a while, like Cooper, and Carter.
