UK Baby Names

Used primarily in Scotland, and represented here by singer Audra McDonald, the girls' name Audra has been overshadowed by the return of the classic Audrey. Audra may be to Audrey what Jenna is to Jennifer and Jessa is to Jessica: A variation that will rise as the original falls from favor.

Alternatively, however, Audra is a separate Lithuanian name, derived from the Lithuanian word for "storm". In this case, it would be pronounced OW-dru (OW to rhyme with cow, -u like the sound in up) and is used as a feminine form of Audrius.

Invented for Bellini's opera, Norma had some star quality in the silent-screen and Marilyn Monroe days, but at this point it's a graying grandma in baby name limbo.

Can one prominent character affect the gender identity of a name? Definitely, as has supernatural bad girl Ridley Duchannes of the Beautiful Creatures series-turned-movie, played by the gorgeous Emmy Rossum.

Before Duchannes, director Ridley Scott all but owned this unusual surname and so gave it a male spin, but it feels girl-appropriate too, thanks to the afore mentioned character and actor Daisy Ridley. The trendy -ley ending helps it along, as it could easily fit in with Wrenley, Hadley, Presley, and similar.

Given to around 100 girls in each recent year, it peaked in 2018 when 124 girls received the name, along with 90 boys.

If it's an alternative to Luke or Lucas you're after, or new inspiration based on Paxton and Braxton, Luxton could make for an interesting option. Blending the cool letter X with a nod to some classics, Luxton was given to 75 boys in the US last year.

As a place a and a surname, Luxton comes from the Middle English Lugg, likely a colloquial form of Lucas, Lewis, or Luke used in the British county of Devon. Paired with the suffix -ton, you could elaborate the meaning into "town of the man form Luciana" or "town of the renowned warrior".

As a modern creation, Luxton could combine the rising name Lux, which means "light" in Latin, with the aforementioned -ton, to get the meaning "town of light".
With nickname options including Lux, Lucky, or Lonnie, Luxton could continue to rise in coming years, having received more exposure thanks to content creator Dina Louann, who chose it for one of her sons.

Bryn is an up-and-coming gentle, yet substantial, Welsh name that would also be effective in the middle spot. In Wales it's a traditional boys' name, but it's far more popular for girls now in the US.
Bryn entered the U.S. girls' popularity list in 1999 but is outranked by the Brynn spelling. Reality star Bethenny Frankel named her daughter Bryn in 2010.
Trivia tidbit: Bryn Mawr college was the first institute of higher learning to offer graduate degrees to women.

Diamond sparkled all through the nineties--reaching as high as Number 150 in 1999. Although its shine has diminished quite a bit, it remains in use.

Followers of the British royal family may know that the name was given in honor of Queen Victoria's sixtieth anniversary on the throne - her Diamond Jubilee. It's said that the queen asked that her granddaughter, born in 1897 during the jubilee year, be named Diamond. But Victoria's son, the future George V, chose Victoria Alexandra Alice Mary instead.

Gentry is a word name that's gaining ground for girls as a kind of updated Jennifer, especially in the Jentry (or Jentri or Jentree) spelling.

Gentry

Former cool-boy name now in middle-aged limbo, but with a nice naturey meaning to endear it to modern parents.

Glen

This much less popular variation draws more from Karin.

Not too long ago, Temperance was found only on lists of Puritan baby names.

With increased increase in virtue names, and Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan on long-running television series Bones, this name has experienced a surprising revival.

A surname-style name with a flowing sound and an easy-going feel, Callaway derives from the French place name, Caillouet-Orgeville, which ultimately comes from the Norman word for "pebble". Also spelled as Calloway, it is alternatively seen as a variation of the Scottish Galloway meaning "place of the foreign Gaels".

A recent year saw this form given to 67 boys and 58 girls in the US, while Calloway was chosen for 87 boys and 22 girls.

Blythe is Nameberry gem — one of those names that visitors to the site are often searching for, despite the fact it's never ranked in the US charts as a given name.

The name is derived the Old English word bliðe, which, just like its homophone blithe, means "merry" or "cheerful." Originally used as a nickname for an upbeat person, it was later adapted into a surname. While it was occasionally used as a name by the Puritans in the 16th century in the forms Blitha for girls and Blyth for boys, it didn't really catch on as a given name until the 19th century.

Blythe embodies a cheerful, carefree spirit and could strike the balance for those who like Blair, Blake, Bitt, and Blaine, but also Ruth, Ivy, Beatrice and Edith. It might also appeal to those who want something spirited and cheerful for their baby, but find Felicity too frilly and Joy too on the nose.
Blythe is the middle name of actress Drew Barrymore—in her case a surname from her rich theatrical history. It is also borne by actress Blythe Danner, mother to Gwyneth Paltrow.
The title of the memorable Noel Coward play Blithe Spirit is taken from Shelley's poetic line, "Hail to thee, blithe Spirit"—a nice tribute to a baby Blythe, while Gilbert Blythe is a literary namesake, from Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables series.

Given to around 100 girls in a recent year in the US, the name, as it stands, peaked in 2013, when it was given to around 170 girls — along with 7 boys.

Alfie is a Top 20 name throughout the British Isles, where retro nickname names are mega-popular, but it hasn't really been picked up in the US yet, given to around 70 boys in a recent year. Nevertheless, both Alfie and rising star Archie are spunky nickname possibilities with a bit of an English accent.
Thanks to some louche fictional characters, Alfie has long had a lovable rogue image. First there was the Michael Caine character in the 1966 eponymous film, followed by a 2004 remake starring Jude Law. In Britain, the name was given a big boost by the Alfie Moon character in the long-running soap, EastEnders.

Alfie

Abilene is a rarely used place name, mentioned as such in the New Testament, that combines the cowboy spunk of the Texas city with the midwestern morality of the Kansas town where Dwight D. Eisenhower spent his boyhood. Abilene is a much more untrodden path to the nickname Abbie/Abbie than the Top 10 Abigail.
In 1857, Eliza Hersey named the frontier village of Abilene, Kansas after a vast plain described in Luke's gospel.
Abilene is the title of a Sheryl Crow song, and the book The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate Dicamillo features a sweet character named Abilene.

Annabel is a spirited name that embodies quirky British gentility. Appearing in Scotland as early as the twelfth century, where it was a royal name, it also recalls the romantic Edgar Allan Poe poem Annabel Lee, written upon the death of his young wife, Virginia.
In the Swinging Sixties, Annabel was in the thick of things as the name of London's trendiest disco and nightclub, named for the wife of the owner. The Annabel spelling is preferable today to Annabelle, too closely associated with the eponymous horror movie doll.

Huntley was best known as Brinkley's fellow news anchor back in the 60s and 70s, while in the UK, it might still be linked to a high profile murder case. Nevertheless, this surname style choice feels tough, trendy, preppy, and outdoorsy at the same time and may fit in with the likes of Hunter, Wesley, and Bentley.

As of 2024, the name is a truly neutral choice, given to 102 girls and 98 boys.

Huntley

A vintage nickname for Roberta or Barbara, most famously borne by Roberta "Bobbie" in Edith Nesbit's classic The Railway Children. Bobbie is one of the adorable boyish nicknames newly fashionable for girls. In tune with the likes of Stevie, Billie, Scottie, and Bonnie, Bobbie was at its most popular in the 1930s and 40s in the US, when it ranked in the Top 200.

Meaning "bright fame" from Roberta and "stranger" from Barbara, Bobbie has been out of the charts in the US since the 1990s, however, it remains well-used in England and Wales, where it ranked at #520 in a recent year. It is showing signs of moving up the US charts too, given to 91 girls in 2025 compared to 65 girls in the year prior.

Bobbie

Edie is part of the Evie-Ellie et al family of cute and friendly short forms that sometimes stand on its own. Briefly popular in the 1960s, it could well be due for rediscovery. It's already a fashionable choice in the UK, where it has ranked just outside the Top 100 for several years.

Several Ediths have chosen to be known by this pet form, including socialite and Andy Warhol superstar Edie Sedgwick, actress Edie Falco, singer Edie Brickell and the Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy relatives called Big and Little Edie in the iconic documentary Grey Gardens. Edie Britt was the character portrayed by Nicolette Sheridan in Desperate Housewives.

British actress Samantha Morton chose Edie for her daughter as did Keira Knightley in 2015. We think Edie is going to continue to rise in the coming years.

Edie

Less popular than the more succinct spelling Blakely, but used more often than Blakeley and Blakelee, this variation may appeal to those honoring a Leigh or like letter-heavy names. Given to 131 girls in a recent year, Blakely was chosen for 1882 in comparison.

Blakeleigh

Evans is an historic Welsh patronymic surname, derived from Evan, which is a form of John. With Evan's popularity in the U.S. and the U.K. -- it's a Top 50 names -- the stylish s-ending version may also be on the rise.
