Christal is a feminine name that represents a variant spelling of Crystal. Derived from the English word for the clear, glass-like substance, it ultimately traces back to the Greek word 'krystallos,' meaning 'ice.' This alternative spelling gained popularity in the United States during the 1970s and 1980s, when parents began seeking more distinctive ways to spell traditional names. Possibly a variant of the Spanish and Native American name, Yaretzi, which might be a variant of Yaritza, which is possibly a variant of Yara, with the suffix 'Itza' added, which could be inspired by the Itza people of Central America, or perhaps borrowed from the sounds of Maritza, which could be inspired by Maritsa River in Europe.

That is a lot of ifs and maybes, but if it is a variant of Yaritza, this could give it the appealing meaning of "friend of the enchanted waters", whereas if it's a variant of Yaretzi, it could mean "you will always be loved".

What is known for certain is that it was one of the highest rising names in the US in 2023, when it was given to 128 girls — compared to the 9 it had been given to in previous years.
