Animal Names for Girls

Popular in its native Hungary where it ranks in the Top 100, Borbála is a variation of Barbara. Derived from Greek, it means "foreign, stranger", and is connected to an early Christian saint, the patron of architects, stonemasons, and geologists.

An interesting piece of trivia: Borbála's name day is on December 4, and traditionally, to celebrate, a branch of a cherry tree (or alternatively, a branch of a lilac bush) was placed in water to see if it would bloom. If it had done so by Christmas day, the new year would be filled with good luck and good health.

Nicknames include Bori, Bara, Borsci, Barbi and Babszi, while a diminutive is Boróka, also used independently.

Borbála

Borboleta is a feminine name derived from the Portuguese word for 'butterfly.' Names based on butterflies appear in various cultures, symbolizing transformation, beauty, and delicacy. While uncommon as a personal name even in Portuguese-speaking countries, it represents the tradition of nature-inspired naming. The word carries melodic quality with its alternating consonants and vowels. As a given name, Borboleta would be quite rare, appealing to parents seeking a name with explicit meaning and poetic qualities. The butterfly symbolism connects the name to concepts of freedom, growth, and natural beauty. Its Portuguese origins give it an exotic quality in non-Portuguese speaking regions.

Boris as a feminine name represents an extremely unusual gender application, as Boris is traditionally and overwhelmingly used as a masculine name across cultures. Of Slavic origin, Boris derives from an old Bulgarian word meaning 'wolf' or 'fighter,' though some sources connect it to the Turkic 'bogoris' meaning 'short.' While firmly established as a male name throughout Eastern Europe (particularly Russia, Bulgaria, and Serbia), its use for girls is virtually unheard of and would be considered highly unconventional. This unusual gender application might represent an emerging creative trend, family tradition, or cross-cultural adaptation. In most Slavic countries, the feminine form would typically be 'Borislava' or 'Boriska' rather than Boris.

Boris

Popular in Hungary where it ranks in the Top 100, Boróka may be considered a word name, meaning "juniper" in Hungarian, making this an equivalent to the stylish English word name. It is also used however as a diminutive to Borbála, the Hungarian form if Barbara.

As a stand-alone name, its popularity is fairly recent, having entered the charts in Hungary back in 2010.

One ancient name that, while unheard these days, could be revived along with such choices as Atticus and Cassius.

The distinctive double 'e' ending gives this name a modern, feminine touch while maintaining its connection to the traditional form. While not among the most common girls' names in the United States, Bradee has seen occasional usage since the 1980s. Parents may choose this name for its subtle blend of strength and femininity, as well as its connection to nature through its original meaning. The spelling variation helps distinguish it from the more masculine Brady while retaining its casual, friendly appeal.

Bradee

Bradey is a feminine variation of the more common masculine name Brady, though it can be used for either gender. It has Irish and English origins, derived from the Gaelic surname Ó Brádaigh, meaning 'descendant of Brádach' (the spirited one). This spelling variation with an 'e' before the 'y' is less common than the standard Brady. As a feminine name, Bradey represents the trend of traditionally male names being adapted for girls. It peaked in the United States during the 1980s and 1990s but remains relatively uncommon. The name conveys a sense of strength and contemporary style, often appealing to parents looking for a name with a slightly unisex quality.

Bradli represents a feminine variation of Bradley, which originated as an English surname derived from the Old English "brād" (broad) and "lēah" (clearing or meadow). This contemporary spelling adaptation transforms the traditionally masculine Bradley into a feminine option through the substitution of the 'i' ending, a common technique in modern naming practices. The name emerged in the late 20th century amid growing interest in surname-inspired girls' names and creative spelling variations. While uncommon, Bradli appeals to parents seeking names with familiar sounds but unique presentations. It projects a modern, somewhat androgynous quality while maintaining connection to its more established masculine counterpart. The name exudes both strength and femininity with its distinctive spelling.

Bradlie is a modern feminine name that represents a contemporary spelling variation of Bradley, traditionally a masculine English surname meaning 'broad meadow' or 'wide clearing.' This feminine adaptation follows the trend of using the '-ie' ending to feminize traditionally male names, similar to patterns seen with names like Charlie and Frankie. Emerging primarily in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, Bradlie offers parents an option that balances gender-neutral origins with a distinctly feminine spelling. The name carries associations of strength and natural beauty from its etymological roots while maintaining a modern sensibility. Though still relatively uncommon, Bradlie appeals to parents seeking names that feel both contemporary and connected to naming traditions.

Bradly is an unusual choice as a feminine name, as it's traditionally a masculine name, a variant spelling of Bradley. The name originated as an English surname derived from Old English words 'brad' meaning 'broad' and 'leah' meaning 'clearing in the woods' or 'meadow'. As a given name, Bradly gained some recognition in the mid-20th century for boys, but remains quite uncommon for girls. This gender-crossing usage reflects the modern trend of adopting traditionally male names for females. For a girl, Bradly offers a strong, distinctive option that stands out from typical feminine names. The alternative spelling without the 'e' gives it a slightly different visual appeal from the more common Bradley.

Bradyn as a feminine name represents a modern gender-crossover trend, as it's more typically used for boys. Derived from the Anglo-Saxon name Bradley or the Irish surname Brady, meaning 'broad meadow' or 'broad island,' Bradyn gained popularity in the early 2000s as part of the trend of adding 'yn' endings to traditional names. While the masculine version emerged as part of the Aiden/Jayden/Brayden trend, its usage for girls remains quite rare. The name has a contemporary, slightly tomboyish quality while maintaining a soft sound through its ending. Parents might choose Bradyn for a daughter appreciating its unique position as a gender-neutral option with roots in nature. The unusual spelling adds a distinctive touch to this uncommon feminine choice.

Bradynn is a contemporary feminine name that represents a modern twist on the traditional masculine name Brady. With Celtic origins, the root 'Brad' means 'broad' or 'wide,' while the added suffix '-ynn' feminizes and modernizes the name. This naming pattern follows the trend of adapting masculine names for girls by adding feminine endings. Bradynn emerged in usage primarily in the United States in the early 2000s, coinciding with the popularity of similar-sounding names like Braden, Jayden, and Madelyn. The double 'n' spelling adds a distinctive touch that parents seeking unique yet familiar-sounding names often appreciate. While still relatively uncommon, Bradynn appeals to parents looking for a name that balances strength with femininity.

Braedan as a feminine name represents an interesting gender crossover from its traditional masculine usage. Historically, Braedan is a variant spelling of Braden or Bradin, derived from Irish and Gaelic origins meaning 'broad' or 'wide valley.' While predominantly used for boys, this spelling variation has occasionally been adopted for girls, reflecting the modern trend of gender-neutral naming. The 'ae' spelling gives it a softer, more distinctive appearance that some parents find appealing for daughters. Though uncommon as a feminine choice, Braedan aligns with the contemporary preference for surnames and traditionally male names for girls. It carries connotations of breadth and openness while maintaining a certain strength and Celtic heritage that appeals to parents seeking names with substance and character beyond conventional feminine options.
