Angus is a traditional yet stylish choice in the UK, especially in Scotland. And it's a cool choice for US parents too, particularly those whose roots go back to Glasgow. The ancient Celtic form Oenghus has important historical overtones in Scotland, and the Gaelic form Aonghas is associated with two distinguished modern poets. In Irish folklore, Angus Og is a chieftain-lord who used his magical powers for the pleasure and prosperity of mankind--and in Irish myth, Aonghus was the god of love and youth.
These days, Angus is even more popular in Australia than Scotland, possibly due to the fame of Scottish-born Australian musician Angus Young, lead guitarist and co-founder of the seminal rock band AC/DC.
Other pop culture references: Angus was the first name of TV's McGyver and the young actor who plays the half man on Two and a Half Men is Angus T. Jones. Angus Wilson was a noted British novelist and short story writer.

Daylon is a masculine name with modern American origins, likely emerging as a variation of more traditional names like Dalen, Dylan, or Waylon. The name blends contemporary styling with a melodic sound that fits current naming trends. Though not among the most common names, Daylon has maintained steady usage in the United States since the 1980s, particularly gaining traction in the early 2000s. The name has a distinctly contemporary feel with its trendy 'ay' sound and the popular '-on' ending seen in many boys' names. Parents might choose Daylon for its modern sound while appreciating that it's not overly common. The name carries connotations of strength and individuality while remaining accessible and easy to pronounce.

The name of the young Greek sun god, brother to the moon goddess Selene and the dawn goddess Eos, Helios is depicted as riding across the sky each day in a chariot pulled by four horses. A personification of the sun and an all-seeing observer, his name feels light and approachable — not too dissimilar to the likes of Hollis, Elias, and Ellis — or to its stylish Italian and Spanish form, Elio.

In Classical Greek, the name would be pronounced as HEH-LEE-OSS while in English, it's HEE-lee-oss. Currently in the French Top 400, spelled as Hélios, it may also be heard as EH-LYOS.

The figure of Helios notably appears in Homer's Odyssey, in which he asks Zeus to punish Odysseus's men after they killed and ate his sacred cattle, despite his warnings not to. Their last ship is destroyed and Odysseus is the lone survivor.

Helios first appeared in the US stats in the 2000s, and has seen more interest since the 2020s. Nearly 60 boys were given the name in a recent year: the highest number on record thus far.

It's hard to believe now that Herman was once, at the turn of the last century, a Top 50 name, remaining in the Top 100 until 1935, and even harder to imagine it making a comeback. But then again, our parents thought the same thing about Max and Jake. Consider the French Armand or Spanish Armando instead. Notable bearers include writers Herman Melville and Hermann Hesse--and then there was TV's Herman Munster.

The heroic movie figure Indiana Jones was often called Indy, as in the equally testosterone-laden Indy 500 car race. It could also be short for Indigo or Indio, or just use it as is.

Javi is a masculine name most commonly used as a diminutive of the Spanish name Javier (Xavier). Javier originates from the Basque place name Etxeberria, meaning 'the new house,' and gained prominence through Saint Francis Xavier, a 16th-century missionary. Javi functions both as a nickname and increasingly as a given name in its own right, particularly in Spanish-speaking countries and communities. The name has gained wider recognition internationally through Spanish sports figures, especially footballers. Javi has a modern, friendly quality while maintaining its cultural roots. Its brevity appeals to contemporary naming trends that favor short, distinctive names with international recognition and straightforward pronunciation.

A spelling variation of Kyson, possibly with a hint of pop cultural influence (via the Kardashians and Gigi Hadid). Sometimes recorded to mean "son of Kyle" (or maybe "son of Kylie"), in this case, it could mean "son of Khy" and therefore "son of the sea".

Substituting a y for an i is becoming an increasingly common way to make a name "unique". Kyngston, a variation of the place-name Kingston which means "king's town," is one such y-ification that has become increasingly popular over the past decade. But when turning a word or a place into a first name, the classiest route is always to stick with the original spelling.

Lipa is a versatile name with multiple cultural origins. In Slavic contexts, it's a masculine name derived from the word for 'linden tree,' a symbol of friendship and peace in many Eastern European cultures. In Yiddish communities, Lipa functions as a diminutive of Lipman, meaning 'lover of peace' or 'man of peace.' The name has historic usage particularly in Jewish communities across Eastern Europe. While not widely common internationally, Lipa retains usage in Poland, Russia, and among Jewish families with Eastern European heritage. The name carries a gentle sound with its soft consonants and balanced syllables, along with positive associations of tranquility and natural beauty through its connection to either peace or the beloved linden tree.

The double 'l' ending gives it a contemporary feel that distinguishes it from the more traditional Marcel. With its blend of classical origins and modern styling, Marcell offers parents a strong yet refined option with international appeal.

An underused Biblical name borne by a New Testament prophet, Nahum feels like a good option for parents looking for a rare but traditional name that fits in with current trends. Derived from the Hebrew naḥam meaning "console" and "comfort", it has a gentle and amiable feel.

A relative of the names Nehemiah and Nechama, in Hebrew, Nahum would be pronounced as nah-OOM. In English, it would be more like NAY-uhm (or NAY-huhm), making it a possibility for those who like Noah, Nathan, and Graham. Given to just 60 boys in the US in a recent year, it isn't entirely unknown but it would still be unexpected.

Variations of the name include the Russian and Bulgarian Naum and the Hebrew Nachum.

Though as a formal name Rusty is a little, well, rusty, it spent half a century among the Top 1000, departing only in 1995. Only 45 baby boys received the name in the US in one recent year and it's difficult to imagine it as the winning choice of many modern parents. Whether you want an informal name or a spin on a traditional name or even a word name or a name that means red, there are simply too many better options.
