Two Syllable Names for Boys

Sayir

Sayler is a masculine name that appears to be a modern occupational surname-turned-first-name, similar to the more common spelling Saylor. It derives from the Old English word for someone who makes sails or is a sailor. As a first name, Sayler follows the popular trend of using occupational surnames as given names, like Mason, Hunter, or Taylor. The distinctive spelling with a 'y' instead of 'i' gives it a contemporary edge. While still uncommon as a first name, Sayler has gained some traction in recent years, particularly in the United States, appealing to parents looking for names with a professional connotation that sound modern yet have historical roots.

Sayler

Reminiscent of Schuyler, Saylor, Shay, and, of course, Shepherd, this German surname has a gentle, outdoorsy meaning and could fit in with other preppy last-names-as-first-names like Colter, Parker, and Tanner. Given to 5 boys in the US in 2024, it is a quietly used and rare option, though we can't see it overtaking Shepherd anytime soon.

Schaefer

An unusual surname style name for those who enjoy the likes of Stetson, Seth, Parker, Carter, Sawyer, and Spencer. It's a name with two possible meanings, both occupational.

One theory is that it derives from schaffaere meaning "shepherd", while the other is that it was used as a name for someone who made caskets (Sargtischler) or who made barrels or casks (Fassmacher), making it an equivalent to the more popular Shepherd and Cooper.

Notably borne as a last name by illustrator Axel Scheffler (known for The Gruffalo) and golfer Scottie Scheffler, it has yet to rank as a given name.

Sedric is a masculine name with Germanic origins, generally considered a variant of Cedric. The original Cedric was actually created by Sir Walter Scott for his 1819 novel "Ivanhoe," possibly based on the Saxon name Cerdic. Sedric offers a slightly different spelling that gives the name a distinctive quality. Though not extremely common, Sedric has maintained a consistent, modest presence in naming records throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. The name carries connotations of strength and nobility, likely influenced by its literary origins. Sedric appeals to parents looking for a name with historical resonance that isn't overused. The name's refined sound combines traditional elements with a touch of uniqueness, making it an interesting alternative to more popular names.
