Two Syllable Names for Boys

Is Brother a baby name? Well, sort of, although it's not a choice you should expect to see on many birth certificates. Brother is in our database thanks to Darren Criss, who named his son Brother László in 2024 (his older sister is Bluesy Belle).

Brother has ranked on the baby name charts three times — in 1924, 1922, and 1912. This was back when name data was taken from the census, suggesting that Brother may have been a placeholder name for newborn boys rather than a name they grew up to be called.

If you like the sound of Brother but worry it could prove too confusing — what if you have multiple sons? — we'd suggest Broder, a rare-but-real Scandinavian name that also means "brother".
