Two Syllable Names for Girls

Raphaëlle

Not a spunkier version of Merlin, Zerlin has roots in the Middle East, Spain and Eastern Europe and is thought to mean "beautiful dawn". The countries where this name is most heard are Israel, Romania and the US, though it has never made it into the Top 1000.

Italian and Spanish variant Zerlina and the French Zerline were once popular in the theatre for pretty and clever female characters.

Zerlin

Although a variant of the operatic Zerlina, Zerline has her own theatrical tale. She is the star character of the opera Fra Diavolo by Daniel Auber. Zerline, daughter of the innkeeper of Terracina, is in love with an impoverished soldier, Lorenzo, but her father wants her to marry the rich old Francesco. Various tragedies and events occur. In the end, Zerline is free to marry her beloved Lorenzo.

Zerline

Elgie is an uncommon feminine name with multiple possible origins. It may serve as a diminutive of names containing the element 'el' such as Eleanor or Elizabeth, or it could derive from the Germanic name Helga, meaning 'holy' or 'blessed.' In some cases, Elgie appeared as a surname before transitioning to first-name usage. The name reached modest popularity in the United States during the early 20th century but has since become quite rare. Its short, distinctive sound offers a vintage charm that occasionally attracts parents seeking unique names with historical connections. Elgie has an endearing quality with its soft sounds and approachable feel, making it a subtle alternative to more common vintage revivals.

A Persian name with a pretty meaning and a dignified sound, Golnar is floral and fruity with orange-red hues. Notable bearers include businesswoman, Golnar Khosrowshahi and singer Golnar Shahyar. An alternative variation is Gulnara, used in Russia, Georgia, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan.

Mietta is either a diminutive of Mia (which in the tradition of many Romance language diminutives is longer than the original) or a "smoosh" name combining Mia and Etta. As combined names go it is elegant and fresh, and avoids the sensation of having been made up.

Lulah is a charming feminine name with multiple possible origins. It may be a variant of Lula, which itself could be a diminutive of Louise (meaning "renowned warrior") or Talullah (meaning "leaping water" in Native American Choctaw language). Alternatively, it might connect to Arabic origins where similar names mean "pearl." Lulah has a delicate, vintage quality that evokes the early 20th century when similar names were more common. Though relatively rare in contemporary usage, it fits with the trend toward reviving gentle, old-fashioned names with a melodic quality. The name carries a sweet, Southern charm and musical resonance with its repeated 'l' sound.

Lizzeth is one of the more pleasing modern variations on Elizabeth, keeping the spunky Z sounds and the softer "eth" ending to create a balanced name. In 2014, nine baby girls were given this name in the USA.

Herma is a feminine name with Germanic and Greek origins. In its Germanic form, it's a shortened version of names containing the element 'herm,' meaning 'warrior' or 'soldier,' such as Hermina or Hermione. In Greek, it may derive from Hermes, the messenger god. Herma was moderately used in the early 20th century, particularly in German-speaking regions and among German immigrants to the United States, but has since become quite rare. The name carries a vintage charm with its soft sounds and classical roots. Some may associate it with 'herma,' a type of sculpture consisting of a head on a square pillar in ancient Greek art, adding a subtle artistic and cultural dimension to the name.

Herma

Derived from the Shakespearean Cressida, or perhaps from Crescentia or Lucrezia, Cressie is a sweet but unexpected nickname-name, reminiscent of Essie, Josie, Jessie, Cassie, and Lettie. For some, however, it might be too close to the salad garnish.

Cressie

Twiggy was the working name of English international supermodel and original 'mod squad' girl Lesley Lawson. While the name conjures images of cool 60s parties and glamour, be warned that this could be a hard name to wear as a teenager, particularly if you're not stick thin. Perhaps best to keep this one as a middle name or nickname.
Twiggy is less likely to be used in Australia, where it is also closely linked to less-than-glamourous mining magnate Andrew "Twiggy" Forrest.

Harleth is a name which probably stems from combining the oh-so-trendy Harlow with the evergreen Elizabeth. However, literary parents may also remember the beautiful but difficult character Gwendolen Harleth from George Eliot's Daniel Deronda. Harleth has a fashionable edge to it, being associated with rising supermodel Harleth Kuusik. We think that Harleth is a pretty alternative to Harlow and hope to see more of it.

Ino was one of the Queens of Thebes who, after her death, became an immortal. Ino raised her nephew, Dionysus (son of Semele and Zeus), provoking the wrath of Hera. In desperation Ino threw herself into the sea and was thereafter venerated as Leucothea (The White Goddess).
In Japanese, Ino means wild boar. Ino is most familiar in a Japanese context from Ino Yamanaka, a character in the Naruto anime.
Despite being short and sweet, and bearing the fashionable "O" ending, Ino is one of the rarer Greek mythology names.

One of the rarer names to come from the Bible, Cherith has a fresh and modern sound despite its ancient roots. Cherith was the name of the stream that kept Elijah alive during the three years' drought which he announced to King Ahab.

In English, Cherith pleasingly reminds one of the word cherish which is another plus to this underused girls' name, while also having similar sounds to choices like Edith and Delyth.
