Short and succinct, Ma is a Chinese feminine name meaning "horse", "graceful", or "elegant" depending on the Han character used. It may also be used as a surname, and occasionally as a masculine name, used as an alternative to Muhammad (back when it was banned in China).

It may also be used in Sweden and Denmark as a short form for names beginning with Ma-, notably Margareta, Maria, and Marie. The spelling variant Má is used in Portuguese in a similar way.
