Seen from our vantage point, Pocahontas is a name that will please no one. It's sure to invite playground mockery, and parents without Algonquin ancestry will be engaging in cultural appropriation. In certain circles, the 1995 Disney movie still stirs up bad blood. The name doesn't even present any obvious nickname possibilities to hide behind. Pocahontas was a very real, and very consequential, historical figure. Though it's worth noting that historians believe Pocahontas was really a sort of nickname rather than her proper name. The Slavic or Russian feminine form of Arkady, which is derived from the ancient Greek name Arkadios, is the equivalent of the English Arcadia -- a heavenly place. For most English speakers, the Arcadia form would be more compatible.

Kasiani, also spelled Kassiani or Cassiane, is an ancient Greek name best known as the name of a saint famous as a hymnographer. The Hymn of Kasiani, traditionally sung on Tuesday of Easter Week in the Greek Orthodox Church, is associated with fallen women. The 9th century saint Kasiani was supposed to be in love with the Emperor Theophilos, who rejected her when she proved to be more intelligent than he.

Virtually unknown in the U.S., Kasiani may well become more prominent along with the raft of similar names gaining new style currency, from the boys' names Cassian and Cassius to Cassia, Kasia and Keziah.

Susanetta is an elaborated feminine form of Susan, which derives from the Hebrew name Shoshana meaning 'lily' or 'rose.' This ornate variation adds romantic Italian or Spanish diminutive suffixes to the classic Susan, creating a more elaborate and decorative version. Though uncommon in modern usage, Susanetta carries a vintage charm reminiscent of names popular in earlier centuries. The name maintains the dignified meaning of its root while adding a touch of European elegance. Susanetta offers parents an opportunity to honor a Susan or Susannah in the family while providing a more distinctive alternative. Its lyrical quality and familiar foundation balance uniqueness with accessibility.

A whole raft of names that start with Adel are coming back into fashion, from Adele to Adelaide to Adeline to Adelina, and so Adelisa -- a hybrid of the Adel sound and the isa suffix -- was given to a handful of girls last year. While still a quiet variation, we predict we'll see more of Adelisa in the coming years, and as hybrid names go, it's quite charming.

With the popularity of Isabella, you might think of Isabelline as a further elaboration -- though it would be the definition of gilding the lily. But Isabelline is also a color, an amorphous pale yellow-gray-cream most often seen in horses' coats or birds' plumage.

Dulcibella is an old name that's fallen into disuse but may rise again with the new wave of fashionable names that end in -bel, -belle, and -bella. Behind the Name says that the medieval form of the name was the Dowsabel, which we definitely do not see making a comeback. But Dulcibel or Dulcibelle could work.

Calpurnia is a name with a massive history. As the third and final wife of Julius Caesar, Calpurnia has been forever depicted in literature (Shakespeare) and film (Cleopatra; Rome) as a modest and sweet woman, utterly devoted to Caesar. She is said to have foretold his death and to have tried (and failed) to have warned him of the treachery of his trusted allies. Following Caesar's assassination, Calpurnia never remarried.
Calpurnia is also familiar to us from Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird as the housekeeper at the Finch household.

Scheherazade -- or Sheherazade --is a legendary Persian queen immortalized as the narrator of all one thousand stories in the One Thousand and One Nights. Her story is even more remarkable than the tales she tells.
Each day the king marries a new woman and then beheads her in the morning. Scheherazade volunteers to marry the King. She relates a gripping story and times it so that as dawn approaches, the King is left with a cliffhanger. Eager to hear the end of the story, the King spares her life. The next night, Scheherazade finishes the tale and begins a new one, again ending the night with a cliffhanger. And so on. After 1001 nights (and 1000 stories) Scheherazade tells the King she has no more stories. However, by this time the King has fallen in love with Scheherazade and makes her his Queen.
Scheherazade is a long and weighty name, but on the right girl or woman it would be an unusual and wonderful choice. Another spelling is Sheherazade.
