Four Syllable Names for Girls

Melaniee

Melaniu appears to be a rare variant or creative spelling of Melanie, a feminine name derived from Greek origins. The traditional Melanie comes from 'melania,' meaning 'dark' or 'black,' originally referring to dark features or complexion. This variant spelling with a 'u' ending is extremely uncommon and may represent a cultural adaptation or unique family spelling. Unlike the standard Melanie, which enjoyed significant popularity in the late 20th century, Melaniu remains exceptionally rare. The unusual ending gives the name a somewhat exotic quality while maintaining the melodic sound of the original. The uniqueness of this spelling would likely make it a conversation starter.

Melaniu

A feminized form of Melchior, the name of one of the Biblical Magi (or Three Wise Men) and therefore associated with Christmas.

Melchiora

Melenaite

Melenia is a feminine name with possible Greek or Slavic origins. It may be a variant of Melania, derived from the Greek word 'melania' meaning 'dark' or 'black.' The name carries an air of mystery and elegance. While not among the most common names, Melenia has a melodic quality with its flowing syllables. It gained some attention in 2022 due to the character Malenia in the popular video game Elden Ring, though the name spelling differs slightly. Melenia offers a unique alternative to more common names like Melanie or Melina while maintaining a similar lyrical quality.

Melenia

If Millicent feels too clunky, Melissa too dated, and Amelia too popular, you could consider this ultra rare alternative. Ultimately from the Gothic name, Amalaswintha, meaning "strong in work" or more literally, "brave, unceasing, and strong", the Normans adapted it into Melisent or Melisende, which then became Anglicized as Millicent.

As such, Melesina borrows from the Norman form, to make a unique but wearable option. Borne by Melesina Trench, an 18th century Irish writer and poet who recorded her experiences with famous figures of the period, it's a one-of-a-kind option, which also offers nicknames Millie, Mina, Minnie, and Mela.

Another possible source of the name is form Melusine, a mythological name associated with a water fairy who turned into a serpent once a week.

Melesina

Melessia

Meliani

Melindasue

Melinia is a feminine name with a flowing, melodic quality. It likely developed as a variation of names like Melina (derived from Greek, meaning "honey") or possibly as an elaboration of Melanie (meaning "dark" or "black" from Greek origins). The name has a romantic, lyrical sound with its soft consonants and vowel-rich construction. Melinia remains uncommon in most English-speaking countries, giving it a distinctive quality for those seeking a unique yet accessible name. The name evokes a sense of sweetness and grace with its honeyed tones. Though rare in historical records, Melinia fits well with contemporary naming trends that favor flowing, multi-syllabic feminine names with classical undertones.

Melinia

In Greek Mythology, Melinoe was the daughter of Persephone, and fathered by both Zeus and Hades. She was one of two moon goddess, the other being Hecate, but was thought to be the bringer of nightmares and madness.

Her name means "having the color of quince," a fruit with a yellow-greenish color that would have been associated with illness and death.

Melinoe

Unusual and lush Roman name adopted, improbably, by the Puritans.

The Cornish version, pronounced mel-YOHR-ah, has been in use since the 13th century.

Meliora

Meliori is a rare feminine name that may derive from the Latin 'melior' meaning 'better' or 'superior.' This uncommon name has a melodic quality with its flowing vowels and soft consonants. The Latin connection gives Meliori an air of classical elegance and sophistication. While not widely used in any country, it appeals to parents seeking a truly distinctive name with positive connotations. The name sounds somewhat similar to more familiar names like Melanie or Melody, but stands apart with its unique ending. Meliori's Latin origins may suggest aspirational qualities, making it appealing for parents who want a name that symbolizes excellence or improvement.

Meliori

The romantic fairy tale-like name has come to modern attention via the beautiful but terrifying sorceress in Game of Thrones. The character may look as lovely as her name sounds, but it's hard to imagine a parent familiar with the book wanting to use the name for their child. Two alternate directions: Millicent or Melisande.

Melisandre

Melissaann

Melissaanne

Melissandre is a feminine name with French origins, derived from the Greek elements 'melissa' meaning 'honeybee' and 'andros' meaning 'man' or 'warrior, a combination that suggests sweetness along with strength.

It gained contemporary recognition through the character Melisandre in George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones series and its television adaptation, where she was portrayed as a powerful priestess. The name has a mystical, medieval quality that appeals to those drawn to uncommon names with historical resonance.

Melissandre

Melissasue

This name — also seen as Mellona — belonged to the Roman goddess of bees and bee-keeping, said to encourage the supply of honey.

Mellonia

An elaborate and poetic form of Melody, Melodia comes from the Greek melos meaning "song". It may additionally be considered the Spanish form of the word name, more traditionally spelled as Melodía.

In Byzantine iconography, Melodia is a personification of chants and songs. She appears in art and illustrations as a Muse for the Biblical King David (also a harpist and shepherd).
