Reyes Origin and Meaning

The name Reyes is a girl's name of Spanish origin meaning "kings".

This regal Spanish name combines several of today's top trends: names that end in S, last names that can also be first names, royal-sounding names, and unisex options. It has a long history of use in Spain as both a surname and a (feminine) given name.

The name came about from a title given to the Virgin Mary, "The Virgin of the Kings", inspired by the legend that she appeared to the 13th century King of Castile, Ferdinand III, and told him that he was succeed in battle. Due to this connection to Mary, in its native Spain it is more often used as a feminine given name.

Not to be confused with Reese or Raya, the name has been used predominantly as a boy name in the US and was given to around 30 boys in a recent year, compared to less than 5 girls.
