Popular in Azerbaijan, Milay is a name of uncertain origin. In Malagasy, it is the word for "need", while in Urdu, it translates to "found". Other sources suggest it is similar to the name Nilay - meaning "moon of the Nile". In that case, it would be comprised of the Turkish element <em>ay</em>, meaning "moon" and "Mil" which could refer to the Turkish province of Milas or perhaps to Milan (or similar). A more literal translation could even be from <em>Mil</em> meaning "shaft", "axle" or "tree" combined with "moon".
