Gorgonia

gor-GON-ee-a, gor-GO-nee-a
Ancient Greek
"like a gorgon"

Gorgonia Origin and Meaning

The name Gorgonia is a girl's name meaning "like a gorgon".

An ancient name worn by a fourth-century saint: St Gorgonia was the daughter of St Gregory the Elder, and a modest, pious wife who was miraculously cured of injuries and ailments. As a consequence, she is a patron against bodily ills.

Unfortunately, today's parents are unlikely to use a name that sounds so much like (and is derived from) "gorgon", the terrifying snake-headed monster of Greek mythology, as in Medusa.
