Cielle Origin and Meaning

The name Cielle is a girl's name meaning "sky, heavens".

Cielle is a French name inspired by the word ciel, meaning "sky". Not used in France itself, spelling it with the -elle ending makes it feel both more feminine and more "name-y". The name might also be considered a short form of Cecilia or a variant of the Ancient Roman Caelius.

While the Ciel spelling is used as a unisex name in the US, Cielle has been given exclusively to girls since it first made the charts in the early 2000s. Given to a small handful of girls each year until 2022, the name then doubled in popularity in 2023, when it was given to 36 girls.

Cielle has been chosen for two celebrity babies in recent years, which may explain the increased use of it. Grey's Anatomy actor Chris Carmack and musician Erin Slaver chose it for their daughter in 2022, while footballer Justin Reid and his partner Marissa Rand named their daughter Cielle in 2025.
