Thamar is a feminine name with ancient biblical roots. It appears in the Old Testament, where Tamar was the daughter-in-law of Judah and later the daughter of King David. The name comes from the Hebrew word 'tamar' meaning 'date palm' or 'palm tree,' symbolizing fertility and beauty in ancient cultures. While the traditional spelling is Tamar, the variant Thamar appears in some translations of the Bible and has been used historically in various cultures, particularly in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Though not widely popular in English-speaking countries, Thamar carries a dignified, exotic quality with its biblical heritage. The name has retained usage particularly in Georgian and Armenian communities, where it has cultural significance.
