Borne by a mythological king of Persia, who was viewed as one of the greatest rulers of Persia's golden age, Jamshid derives from the ancient AvestanYima xšaēta. The king's original name was Jam (or more traditionally Yima or Jama), which was then combined with an honorific, to give the meaning "shining, radiant Jam". Jam itself means "twin" so a literal interpretation would be "shining twin". 
 
Also spelled as Jamshed, Jamshyd, and Jamsheed, the name is common in Central Asia and Iran, and among Muslim communities in South Asia. Notable bearers include software engineer Jamshid Sharmahd and musician Jamshid Moghadam, known simply as "Jamshid".
