Indigenous Australian Names

My favourite Indigenous names from Australia! (where I live and apart of my heritage)
  1. Lena
    • Origin:

English, Scottish, Dutch, German, and Scandinavian, diminutive of various names ending in -lena
    • Description:

This pet form of Helena and other ena-ending names, long used as an independent name, is attracting notice again as an option both multicultural and simple. Lena was a Top 100 name from 1880 to 1920.
  2. Nerida
    • Origin:

      Greek; Aboriginial
    • Meaning:

      "sea nymph, mermaid; red waterlily"
    • Description:

This is one of the more unusual examples of a group of Greek names connected to the sea, which makes sense for a nation of coastline and islands. The Nereids or water nymphs were the daughters of sea god Nereus.
  3. Kora
    • Origin:

      Maori, English, Greek
    • Meaning:

      "maiden"
    • Description:

As the softer-looking Cora of Downton Abbey fame charted highly in the US and the UK, some parents were looking for a way to make this name a little less common, a bit more trendy or far more Germanic by using a "K". We prefer the C version, but Kora is still an elegant name.
  4. Alinta
    • Origin:

      Australian Aboriginal
    • Meaning:

      "fire, flame"
    • Description:

This Noongar girls’ name has a dainty sound that belies its fierce fire meaning and could easily cross over into the American or European context.
  5. Latani
    • Kulya
