Melvene

Melvene is an uncommon feminine name that appears to be a variant of Melvin or Melvina. With Germanic origins, it's ultimately derived from elements meaning 'council friend' or 'dear friend.' This distinctive variation emerged in the early 20th century but never achieved widespread popularity, remaining a truly unique choice. The name has a vintage quality that aligns with the revival of other classic names, yet its rarity means it still stands out. Melvene combines the strength of its Germanic roots with a softened, feminine ending. The name might appeal to parents seeking something with historical grounding but little chance of their daughter sharing her name with classmates or colleagues.

Pronounced mel-VEEN.

As of October 2026, Melvene ranked #6572 in US births in 1956 SSA, peaked at #3345 in 1935.
