These Names Are Peaking

December 30, 2019 Pamela Redmond
names that peaked

Here at Nameberry, we have all kinds of exclusive data on the standing of baby names on the official US name popularity list, other national and local top names lists, plus our own internal name popularity counts.

One insider list we love: Names That Peaked in 2018.

That link will lead you to the full list on Nameberry, based on 140 years of data from the Social Security Administration. The names on this list reached their highest popularity standing ever in 2018, the most recent year counted by the SSA.

What does it mean, in the larger sense, when a name is at its peak?

It may mean that a name has reached high popularity, but not always. While all these names rank among the US Top 1000 Baby Names, many lie well outside the Top 100.

Some of these names at their highest point ever won’t (or can’t, in the case of Number 1 names Emma and Liam) get any higher. And some still have a long upward climb ahead.

You’ll find all kinds of names on this list, from classic to super-trendy. Some are peaking thanks to sustained popularity, while others have a pop culture or celebrity connection. What they share is current widespread appeal.

To further illuminate, we’ve broken the larger list down into some Top 10s, meant to be more illustrative than comprehensive. For more, consult the full list.
