Magical Mystery Names
In our baby-naming books, from Beyond Jennifer & Jason on, we’ve often offered lists of name-inspiring authors and literary characters. But it occurred to me recently that we’ve neglected one of the richest sources–the genre of mystery writers and their fictional heroes and heroines–from Agatha Christie to Alex Delaware. The band of gumshoes, shamuses, cerebral sleuths, police inspectors and forensic investigators populating vintage and modern mystery books and television detective shows provides some really interesting choices, among them:
ELLERY Queen (both author and character)
KINKY Friedman (both author and character)
LACEY, Mary Beth
MADOLYN (MADDIE) HAYES

Where’s Dorothy L. Sayers or her sleuth Lord Peter Wimsey? Some more contemporary authors include P.D. (Phyllis Dorothy) James and Ellis Peters (real name Edith Pargeter).

Jane Marple was my favorite Agatha Christie character! Marple might make an interesting and pretty/offbeat choice.
A few more from childhood: HARRIET the Spy, NANCY DREW (thus helping to feminize the image of Drew), and TRIXIE Belden. From TV: Dana Scully.
I’m really surprised that Cagney never caught on. Seems to hit just the right timbre for that era. To my delight, I’m hearing of more Dashiells and Agathas around here. Great topic today.

Interesting topic! There’s also Veronica Mars for the TV list.

This is a great list! There’s also Honey Wheeler, from Trixie Belden… and the Boxcar Children included Violet, Jesse, Henry, and one more that I’m blanking on.

I thought I’d save the kids’ books ones for a separate blog.
