I'm a native Spanish speaker. Sonora doesn't sound like Señora, at all. However, I wouldn't use it as a given name, it means 'something that produces sounds' (f) and it's kind of odd. Sonora Webster is a great namesake though.

Just ordered a copy of A Girl and Five Brave Horses for my daughter through our local bookstore. This book is the basis for the movie “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken” and was hard to track down! So I’ve been crushing on this name. I like Soni for a nickname.

Daiseymae Says:

It reminds me of taking a "snore". It also reminds me of " sayonara"
When I was little, there was this horrible girl named Lora who was really rotten and mean. My sister always called her "Snora". However, I do like Cynara.

I like the idea behind Sonora as a baby name (it makes for a fun less heard-of place name), and Nora as a nickname, but when this name is written down, it looks like someone is saying something to the effect of, "oh Nora, she's so Nora!". And it sounds too much like the name of a radio station to me-- I'm pretty sure a Sonora FM exists somewhere. Sonora sounds lively and pretty though.
