Philomela Origin and Meaning

The name Philomela is a girl's name of Greek origin meaning "lover of songs".

Philomela, the name of a mythological Athenian princess who was transformed into a nightingale, is rarely heard outside the Greek community. The mellifluous Philomela might make a more distinctive and prettier update for Pamela or Phyllis. Philomela may also be a good choice for a music-lover's daughter. Try Pippa or Millie for short.

Nameberry you've said that both Philomela and Philomena are the same princess. Could you do us a favour and fix that please?

This name is often described with the meaning lover of song, but some Greek scholars think this is a mistake. It is sometimes translated as lover of sheep, or lover of fruit. I suppose it is a nice meaning whichever translation you choose to believe.

And while I do like the sound of Philomela, I can't get over the rape and mutilation. I wouldn't want that to be the first result when I google my name.

It's a bit cumbersome in my opinion

Wouldn't Philly, Phil or Philo come much more accessibly as a nickname than Pippa? The only sounds Pippa has in common with Philomela are the i and the a.
