It should common logic not to name your kids after slang for sexual orientation, sorry folks!

I actually like the name, but it would probably get associated with homosexuality.

This makes a pretty middle name for a girl, i.e. Mariah Gay. I would stay away from it as a first name, though.

I would be too scared to use this name. Sure there's other names that mean the same thing, it doesn't make it better or more appropriate. Who cares that there is stupid ignorant people in the world? This name is beautiful on its own right

In modern America with all these constant fights from conservatives vs liberals about rights for LGBT Americans WHY would you name your child Gay? I know it means happy but in modern American culture it means homosexual and there are too many people in this country who are not as open-minded as Berries. I personally like Gaelle but Gay by itself is just too problematic for me. (Unless it was my surname or something, I've known people with the surname Gay)

Maybe Gayle is a safe alternative?

Oh I definitely know that, even first hand as I have an aunty named Gaye!

I must say if you are going to choose this name JUST because of the meaning I would suggest using a different name. There are many other names that mean joyful/happy. If you like older names that mean joyful/happy I think Joyce would be a cute alternative. JS!

I know that but there is too much teasing potential nowadays

It was a joke sorry if is was offensive

Arieljordann Says:

I can't tell if you're making a joke. I know several older women with the name Gay(e) and no one equates it to their sexual preference. That would be rather ignorant.

jessieo Says:

Gay / Gaye is an older word for happy and is a legitimate name. It wasn't associated with homosexuality back then.
