Amara is the Italian word for bitter, from the same root as Mary and Miriam. It has separate roots in West Africa as a name that means "grace" in the Igbo language. These two meanings are the best-known, but Amara is also a Sanskrit name meaning "immortal", an Arabic word meaning "tribe" and a Mongolian name meaning "peaceful". Alternatively, it can mean "to love" in various languages such as Galician and Portuguese.

One likely source is the Arabic name Inaya, itself derived from the word inayah meaning "care, concern, help". A strictly feminine form of the unisex Inayat, it is familiar in France, the Netherlands, Lebanon, India, and Palestine.
 
Alternatively, Anaya could be a variation of the Hebrew Anaiah, meaning "Yahwah has answered", or it could be a form of the Basque name Anaia, meaning "brother". Additionally, parent may choose it as an alternative spelling for the modern invention Aniya, likely inspired by Aaliyah, Anita, Amaia, and Anya.

In Hindu tradition, Indra is the warrior god of sky and rain, whose name is often used as element of other names, such as Jaswinder or Rajendra. Its use as a feminine name may come from the Western world hearing it as feminine (thanks to Alexandra, Indira, or similar), or simply as a shortening of Indrani (meaning "wife of Indra").
 
In Latvia and Lithuanian, however, it is a girl name, inspired by Indraja, meaning "reed". In Lithuanian mythology, Indraja was the personification of Jupiter, associated with the aforementioned Hindu god, and known as "the water witch". Additionally, Indra may come from the Latvian Indra River, also known as the Indrica, and as such, a feminine form of Indriķis, a Latvian form of Henry.
