The Japanese word for the land of the dead, it may also be interpreted as meaning "world of darkness" or "yellow springs". According to Japanese mythology, Yomi isn't like heaven (a place of reward and paradise), nor is it a place of suffering and punishment like hell. Rather, the souls of the dead remain forever where they lived, existing in a shadowy way.

Reminiscent of Romi, Kiyom, and Nyomi, Yomi can also mean "reading" in Japanese, if alternative kanji are used, which may appeal more for some. Alternative, as a Yoruba name, it may be a shortened form of names like Abayomi and Oluwayomi, meaning "they would have mocked me" and "God is my joy" respectively.

Used in a variety of mangas, animes, and games, Yomi made its US debut in 2020, but remains only quietly used, given to 11 girls in a recent year.
