Names That Mean Pleater

Tucker has more spunk than most last-name-first-names, and also a positive, comforting ("Tuck me in, Mommy") feel.
Tucker got something of a preppy image via bow-tied conservative TV commentator Tucker Carlson, and quite the opposite from writer/blogger Tucker Max, author of the #1 best-seller I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell. Tucker Crowe is a character in the Nick Hornby novel Juliet, Naked.

Tucker

Sharp and preppy.

Parents of young children may recognize it as the name of the turtle from the television show Wonder Pets.

Tuck

Tucker is used far more often as a boy name and has ranked as such in the US Top 1000 since the late 1970s. However, it has also been given to a small but consistent number of girls each year since the mid 90s. Chosen for 11 girls in 2024, compared to more than 1700 boys, Tucker might also work as a fun, boyish-nickname for the likes of Octavia or Tallulah, in the same way Flick might be used for Felicity or Max for Matilda.

The name is considered an occupational surname, borne by someone who cleaned and thickened raw cloth and who pleated fabric.

Tux can be used as a short form of Tucker, but you're likely more familiar with it as a name for black and white cats. As a pet name, Tux comes from tuxedo — black and white men's formal evening wear. The tuxedo was named after Tuxedo Park, a development for the New York elite and the site of the country club where the tuxedo was first worn.

Tuxedo Park, in turn, is speculated to be named after an Indigenous term. In Algonquian, p'tuck-sepo means "crooked river".
