Names That Mean Must

Amanda may no longer be the most popular girls' name in her class, but it still holds appeal with its pleasing meaning and solid yet romantic sound. Its heyday however was back in the eighties when it skyrocketed alongside Samantha, Vanessa, Melissa, and co.

A classic of sorts, Amanda is a feminine form of Amandus, rediscovered, or recreated, by 17th century writers who were drawn to its Latin meaning, "lovable, worthy of love". It has appeared in various works of literature over the years, including Colley Cibber's play Love's Last Shift from 1696, Tennessee William's The Glass Menagerie from 1944, and Rumaan Alam's 2020 novel, Leave The World Behind.

The name came into familiar usage back in the 19th century and peaked in 1980 when it reached #2 on the charts. With a range of nicknames such as Andie, Mandy, Ami, Addie, and Amma, it made for a versatile choice.

Now in decline, more recent stats saw Amanda remain just inside the Top 500 in the US, given to around 630 girls in a recent year. If you'd prefer something similar but fresher, you might consider the French Amandine or Shakespearean Miranda.

Amanda

A seventies favorite, Mandy once appeared in the US Top 100, joined by the likes of Brandi, Kristy, Nancy, Lori, and Misty. By the mid-2000s, it had fallen out of favor, and while long form Amanda remains a familiar choice, Mandy was given to just 35 girls in a recent year (compared to 3110 at its peak).

Typically considered a diminutive of Amanda, it may also be used as a short form of Miranda, Mandira, Mandeep, Magdalena, Amandla or similiar.

Mandy

An elaborate from of 80s favorite Amanda, this form is most familiar among Portuguese speakers. Derived from the Latin amanda meaning "lovable, worthy of love", this variation may feel slightly fresher than the less elaborate form.
