Names That Mean About

Atari the baby name is directly correlated with Atari the company. It joined the baby name charts in 1979 when the popular video game Space Invaders was released. It was given to small numbers of boys and girls for the next few years and reemerged in 2006 following Atari Bigby's NFL draft.

The company took their name from the Japanese word atari, translated "I’m about to win." It is said much like one would say "checkmate" when playing chess, but in the context of the ancient Chinese game Go.

Atari is also an Israeli surname derived from the Arabic and Sephardic surname Atar, meaning "chemist" or "apothecary."

Dragomir

Atari debuted for girls in 1980, a year after it appeared on the charts for boys. It's not a Japanese given name, instead, the name was influenced by the video game company. Atari named themselves after a Japanese phrase, atari, used in the ancient Chinese game Go. It means, roughly, "I am about to win," and is said in a similar context to which one would say "checkmate" in chess.

Atari is also an Israeli surname derived from the Arabic and Sephardic surname Atar, meaning "chemist" or "apothecary."
