Derived the Spanish sabana, itself borrowed zabana, a Taino word used by the indigenous people of the Caribbean, Savannah refers to areas of flat grasslands that exist in hot climates.
 A name with a trail of pop cultural references, there were Savannahs in the novel and movie The Prince of Tides, in the Terry McMillan hit novel and film Waiting to Exhale, played by Whitney Houston and, even earlier, in a 1982 movie called Savannah Smiles.
