Names That Mean Oil

As with many grandmother-y names, this choice may be coming back into style.
Myra was invented in the seventeenth century by a poet called Fulke Greville as a short form of Miranda--or perhaps an anagram of Mary-- and it quickly caught on with other poets and romantic novelists, particularly popular with the Scots. There were leading characters named Myra in Sinclair Lewis's novel Babbitt and in Theodore Dreiser's An American Tragedy. Later it was the name of the central character in Gore Vidal's 1968 Myra Breckinridge, and plays a minor role in the Divergent. trilogy.
Myra was as high as Number 158 in the 1880s. A notable namesake is the great pianist, Dame Myra Hess.

Minik has long been among the Top 10 names in Greenland, but only came to international attention in 2011 when the Danish royal family used it as one of Prince Vincent's middle names.
Minik also has a much sadder history. Minik was one of the six Inuk people (the only child) brought to New York by the megalomaniacal explorer Robert Peary to be studied by anthropologists at the American Museum of Natural History. His father, who died soon after arriving, was put on display as a skeleton. Minik eventually went back to Greenland; however, finding that he had forgotten much of his language and culture, he decided to return to New York. He died soon after in the influenza pandemic of 1918.

While Meron looks like a variation of Maren or Marion, her origins are in Ethiopia: Meron is the name of the holy oil used for christenings in the Ethiopian Orthodox church.

Meron

Alternative spelling of Gethsemane, the biblical garden on the Mount of Olives where Jesus was arrested. It could be considered part of the wave of new Christian spiritual names, and the spelling has the advantage of making the pronunciation clear.
