Hiʻiaka Origin and Meaning

The name Hiʻiaka is a girl's name meaning "carry + embryo".

In Hawaiian mythology, Hiʻiaka is the volcano goddess Pele's youngest and most favorite sister. Hiʻiaka is derived from the Hawaiian components hiʻi, meaning "hold; carry" and aka, "embryo; essence", which fits with the legend of Hiʻiaka's birth.

In the myth, Pele's mother entrusts her with looking after an egg, which turns into a baby girl. Pele names the child Hiʻiakaikapoliopele, meaning "Hiʻiaka in the bosom of Pele", and calls her Hiʻiaka for short.

Hiʻiaka has made the charts in Hawaii only once, in 2009.
