Azahara
Azahara Origin and Meaning
Beautiful and bright, Azahara ultimately comes from the Arabic zahra meaning "blossom, flower", though in Spain, it refers specifically to orange blossom. It appears in a title of the Virgin Mary, Nuestra Señora del Azahar ("Our Lady of the Orange Blossom"), which came about due to the citrus trees surrounding a church dedicated to her in Murcia, Spain.
Alternatively, Azahara cane be derived from a different Arabic element, zahara, meaning "to shine". In this case, it is related to the now ruined medieval city, Medina Azahara, which is located in Córdoba, Spain.
Whichever meaning you choose to go with, Azahara is a sparkly feeling choice, familiar in its Native Spain where it would be pronounced a-tha-A-ruh, but a rare choice in the US, where it was given to eight girls in 2024.
