Amoy

Amoy is a perennially popular girl name in Jamaica, where it's purported to mean "beautiful goddess". Despite its ubiquity on the island, Amoy has never been given to more than 11 American baby girls in a single year.

Amoy was the name of a southeastern Chinese city now known as Xiamen. The name came from the pronunciation of "lower gate" in the local dialect since Amoy was considered the "gate to the sea". Amoy is still used — though sparingly — as a feminine given name in China.
