Given to boys born on the last of the four Igbo market days (Nkwo</em), Okonkwo notably appears in Chinua Achebe's classic novel, Things Fall Apart, in which Okonkwo is a famous wrestling champion and feared warrior, who opposes the Christian missionaries and colonialists when they come to his village.
 
It is also used as a surname with notable bearers including footballers Arthur Okonkwo and Chig Okonkwo, and actor Chiké Okonkwo.
