Canelo Origin and Meaning

The name Canelo is a boy's name of Spanish origin meaning "cinnamon tree; winter's bark tree".

A rare Spanish nature name, Canelo comes from both the Spanish canela meaning "cinnamon" and the Chilean and Argentinian canelo, meaning "winter's bark tree". A melodic choice for a winter baby, it is notably borne by Mexican boxer, Canelo Álvarez.

It may also be associated with the Spanish dog, commemorated in Cádiz for his unconditional love and loyalty. Canelo had spent his days accompanying his owner to hospital and waiting outside while he had kidney dialysis, however, when his owner died in hospital, Canelo continued to wait outside. Despite multiple attempts to rehome him, he always escaped and for the next twelve years, he would be outside the hospital waiting. On his death, a memorial was built to honor his loyalty.

A sweet namesake, perhaps, and one that may also make this name charming for a puppy.
