Tweak That Name!!
Perhaps you’ve picked out a name you thought was new and different, only to find you were inadvertently following the trends. Or you’ve been “saving” a favorite name so long that, now that you finally have a chance to use it, it’s no longer as fresh as it was when you picked it.
The solution? Tweak that name.
With our very first book, Beyond Jennifer & Jason, we began suggesting ways that parents could update, respin, and coolify (yeah, that’s a word we made up) the names they might be considering.
Don’t get us wrong: Many of these names are pretty cool already. Cool and beautiful and interesting and all those good things. But still, there’s sometimes a way to ratchet them up a notch or two, and that’s what we’ve done here.
Girls
Instead of ………………..Consider
PHOEBE……………….PERSEPHONE
Boys
Instead of…………….Consider
NOAH……………….NOAM (the new number 1 name in Israel, used for girls as well as boys)
Any other brilliant ideas for name tweaks? We know you have some!

Barb Says:
We’re due in a couple weeks and, if it’s a girl, we’re planning on naming her Grace. Our son’s name is 3 syllables and I’d rather have a girls name with at least 2 syllables. Anyone have any ideas about how we can modify Grace to make it a bit longer (and different?) Thanks!!
Emz Says:
You could go for Gracia or Graciela (I particularly like the latter). Grazia is pretty and would yield Gracie as a nice nickname.
You could make it a double barrel – Mary Grace (too Catholic?), Anna Grace, Maya Grace, Lila Grace… Grace doesn’t sound as good at the beginning of a double barrel, though.
I don’t think Grace needs messing with though. I think it’s lovely on its own – simple and classic.
ectd Says:
@CLEMENTINE…………CLEMENCY
Clemency means something and the connotation isn’t exactly positive.
Clementine – pleasant citris fruit
Clemency proceeding – Legal proceeding granted a prisoner sentenced to death before he/she is executed.
I would stick with Clementine…I don’t mean to bash a name but I would hate to see a little kid stuck with this association.

I love Jacoby (Ja-ko-bee) instead of Jacob.
I love Isadora and Isis.
Whenever I see Ismay I think dismay and Sariah I think of the disease psoriasis…not good visuals there.
I would love it if you did a blog dedicated to all names Rose, it has become such a filler middle name, it’s one of my favourites, but I would love to see all the unique and interesting options laid out together! Please, please, please consider it!
Rose Says:
It’s makes me really sad to think of my name as a filler… Even though it is, a lot of the time. However, Rose as a first name really isn’t very popular at all, to the best of my knowledge. In fact, I’m the only Rose that I’ve ever met, if you disregard Rosalie’s and Rosalyn’s and one girl I know named Roz.
Also, one person said Anna…..Sanna. I would alter Sanna to Sanne, which is pronounced the same, but I think looks and feels better. It’s a short form of Susanna, which means lily or rose.
Filipa Says:
Ava … Alda
Emma … Alma
Olivia … Ilidia
Abigail … Valquiria
Chloe … SalomĂ©
Audrey … Aurea
Marjorie Says:
How is Hamish a “ratcheted up” Jacob???
@ectd “Clemency” means “mercy” or “leniency.” You might associate it with inmates’ requests for stays of execution, but the word itself is a nice one.
Ectd Says:
@Marjorie – I wasn’t saying that the word “clemency” has a negative meaning. As you pointed out it has a lovely meaning and is a good virtue. My point was that as a name it could have a negative association. When you google “clemency” the death penalty information center is the fourth result. Not all words with positive meanings make good names. I think doing a “google test” is critical when considering any name for your child.

Cailin Says:
When my mom was pregnant with my older brother she loved the name Caitlin (or any variation of the spelling) but by the time I came along the world was too full of them. That said, she didn’t exactly “tweak” it into a new name but rather found a name that was close but different in a baby book. Cailin was a name before I popped out, though a rare one at that. It’s pronounced like Caitlin without the ‘T’, and is a (American) mispronunciation of the Gaelige (Irish Gaelic) word for girl (which should be pronounced Colleen.)
PrincessNoriBori Says:
I’m officially terrified that my name is on a name-tweak list… *gulp* curse you social security list!!!!

Wow I really like some of these. Leith, Rowena, and Seren pretty. And I love Georgiana. But I prefer Louisa to Louise or Eloise.
