It may surprise you to know that surname name Porter was fairly popular in the US in the 19th and early 20th centuries, then went underground for 40 years only to reemerge at the turn of this century and climb the ladder again.

Now, it's wobbling around the middle of the Top 1000 list for boys, not a bad place to be. Theoretically unisex, Porter is used seven times as often for boys as for girls.

 St. Regina was a third century virgin martyr and her name was originally bestowed on girls in the Middle Ages, but it is used by modern Roman Catholics more because Regina Coeli (Queen of Heaven) is one of the Virgin Mary's titles. Often found in literature, Regina Engstrand plays a role in Ibsen's Ghosts, Regina Giddens is the central character in Lillian Hellman's play The Little Foxes and Regina Durham appears in Gore Vidal's novel The Judgement of Paris; more recently she was a mean girl in the movie Mean Girls. Regina is the birth name of actress Jenna Fisher.

Now that many dogs are named Max, it's safe to use this sleek, solid, regal name again for your child. And with the charm of its final x, its regal meaning, and its offbeat simplicity, Rex is definitely one to consider.
 Coldplay's Will Champion used it for his twin son, and Natascha McElhone gave her little boy the doubly cool appellation Rex Coltrane, and Niki Taylor — intentionally or not — gave her son the full name of the British My Fair Lady star, Rex Harrison (who was actually christened Reginald). And quite fittingly, Rex is name of a toy T-Rex in Toy Story.

In the World War II era, Roger had nothing but the most positive associations, actually used by military personnel to mean 'Received and understood'--or A-OK, and though it is now on extended furlough, it does have a long and distinguished history. Introduced to England after the Norman Conquest of 1066, Roger soon became very popular there, with nicknames Hodge and Dodge, and had a long run later in the U.S, remaining in the Top 100 for 55 years.
 Roger has an impressive list of notable namesakes, both fictional and real. Roger Chillingworth is a major character in Hawthorne's classic The Scarlet Letter, and the name appears in works by Ben Jonson and Anthony Trollope. In sports, there have been Rogers Maris, Clemens, Bannister and Federer, in entertainment actor Roger Moore and Roger Daltry, lead singer of The Who. And of course, many of us remember Roger Ramjet from our childhoods.
 On the dark side, there is the Jolly Roger--a pirate's black flag with skull and crossbones--which a little boy might actually love.

Austrian actress Romy Schneider seemed to be the singular bearer of this international nickname name until it found new style currency in the past decade. 
 Like other Ro-names Roman, Rowan, and Romeo, Romy has gained favor with the celebrity set. Matt Lauer has a daughter named Romy, as do director Sofia Coppola and Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars and others. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and wife Carrie named their daughter Romy in 2021.
 Some might remember the 1997 comedy Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion, with Mira Sorvino as Romy.
 Romy hasn't entered the US Top 1000 as yet, but it's a Top 100 name in several European countries, and especially popular in France. In Spanish-speaking countries, Romy is also a diminutive of Romina, and was very popular in the eighties and early nineties.

This name, once considered overly powerful due to the superhuman strength of the biblical figure, is now an option for parents in search of an unusual route to Sam. But you really don't need that p: Samson will do.

Sara, the streamlined form of Sarah, makes this ancient name feel more modern, but perhaps a bit lighter weight. 
 
Some Old Testament sources give Sara as a variation of Sarai, the Biblical personage's original name, and some give it as the authentic form of the new name of Isaac's 90-year-old mother Sarah. But most sources authenticate Sarah as the Biblical classic and Sara as the variation.
 
Currently in the US, there are about two baby girls named Sarah for every one given the Sara spelling.

Could Simeon be the next Gideon? Parents seeking a less simple form of Simon might consider this biblical appellation that was chosen by Wynton Marsalis for his son. Simon is actually the Greek substitute for Simeon. 
 The first known Simeon was Leah and Jacob's son, who gave his name to one of the twelve tribes of Israel, the Simeonites; in the New Testament it is the name of the man who blessed the infant Christ. Both Simeon and Simon were popular names for saints.
One caveat: Simeon is undeniably similar to the word meaning "apelike".

Susannah is by far the most stylish form of the classic name now that Susan and Suzanne have retired. Susannah has biblical and musical pedigrees, is impervious to trends, and has an irresistible, flowing rhythm. It can be spelled just as properly with or without the final 'h.'
 Susannah is one of the loveliest names that, surprisingly, is not in the Top 1000—and hasn't been since 1978—though we expect that to change as soon as the memory of too many older Susans and Susies fades.
 Susannah and Susanna seem to have traded place over time as the dominant version. How do they differ? The h-less version feels a bit more streamlined and modern, and might refer more directly to an ancestor named Ann or Anna, while Susannah seems more old-school Biblical and self-contained.
 
In the Apocrypha, Susannah is the beautiful and devout wife of Joachim, falsely accused of unfaithfulness by the elders.
 William Shakespeare named one of his daughters Susanna.
 A European short form that's become popular is Sanna/Sanne. The Hebrew Shoshana has played a prominent role on the TV show Girls. Zuzu is an adorable nickname from the classic Christmas fiilm, It's a Wonderful Life.

This name of three early popes has been associated in recent years with a cocky cartoon cat ("Thufferin' thuccatash!") and the Italian Stallion hero of the Rocky and Rambo movies (who was born Michael) — and yet we think it just might be ready to move further back into the mainstream.
 
Sylvester was at its height in the 1920s, when it was in the Top 200, and hung on in the lower rungs of the ladder until 1994. Lately the name has been most visible as a surname — that of Sue Sylvester on Glee. Model Emily Ratajkowski named her son Sylvester Apollo in 2021.

In 1953, Taryn was presented to the public as an invention by actors Tyrone Power and Linda Christian for their daughter's name, at which point it gained a short spurt of popularity. Taryn returned to the Top 1000 in 1974, peaking in the 1980s, and has remained on the list ever since.
 
Nicollette Sheridan played a character named Taryn Blake in a 1980's TV series, and Taryn Baker was the name of an O.C. character.
