I know a woman named Lavender, which is pretty cool.
sadiesadie Says:
I had to decide between Roan and Grey/Gray for the middle name spot Conrad. Gray won but I still love Roan.
Whit Says:
I was hoping for Lavender to be on the list.
Anyway the only ones on the list I’d consider using, apart from the relatively safe Scarlett and Violet, are Grey and Olive
pam Says:
Lavender is gorgeous — I just felt I had to decide between it and Violet. Violet is such a great name and is so much in the air right now, but if I were naming my own baby, I would probably pick Lavender over it!
Marcia Says:
As a fan of the University of South Carolina, the name Crimson gives me great pause for two reasons: Crimson sounds very close to Clemson and Alabama is the Crimson Tide. No thank you.
However, I absolutely love Scarlett, Violet, Grey, Olive and Roan. Indigo sounds a little hippie-esque to me.
Jennie Says:
One of my favorite odd-names I’ve found was Bridger Golden. Bridger is popular here in Utah (so I’ve heard), but Golden totally took me by surprise. Color names are great middle names! They really spice things up.
SJ Says:
I actually really love Indigo! I think I could really use it as a first name–Indy would make a cute nickname for a boy or a girl. I also like Violet, Scarlett, and Grey.
Jade feels kind of outdated to me, Roan reminds me of livestock, and Olive is just too… something. And for some reason Crimson makes me think of unpleasant things, even though Scarlett doesn’t.

I really like all the purple shades-Lavender, Lilac, and Violet. I like Jade and Ruby, but I don’t know if I would actually use any of these on my own child, aside from Violet. They would make great names for characters, though!
Izzy Says:
I’m loving Lavender right now! I don’t think it’s too risky. Lav or Lavvie is a cute nickname, too. Lavender also ages very well. I think it’s a great choice, first or middle.
Then of course I like the standard Ruby/Scarlett/Violet. Jade and Olive are decent. I know I would like the name Gray for a boy but I know a complete dbag with this name, so unfortunately I kind of hate it.

I’ve always loved Grey and Roan
I also love
Claret
Sable
slate
Jen Says:
Gray is Jennifer Garner’s name in “Catch and Release”. It fit her character, a more down-to-earth, tomboy, tree-hugger-but-casually-so personality. I dig it.
Violet is my grandma’s name, but she goes by Vi. Vi will be our next daughter’s middle name.
Indigo is interesting, but I automatically think of Native Americans. Why, I dunno. Not that it’s a bad name, it’s just VERY earthy and removed as a human name. Would make an excellent middle name, IMHO.
Jade is nice and exotic. Roan is too. I would hate for people to misspell it as “Joan”, though…

Macy Says:
I think Indigo works way better on a boy. And let’s not forget Jade, which started out as a boy colour before it, of course, got borrowed for the girls and was never returned.
Kelly Says:
I grew up with a girl named Crimson, she said her parents got it from the song Crimson & Clover!! I always loved name & wish I had one as different as her…….I love Gray for a boy, very handsome:)
Elle Says:
Color names can be very adorable. I like a few of the ones mentioned here. Some of my favorites not on the list…
Navy
Auburn
Forest
Hazel
Sienna
Christy Heather Says:
Some Brits use ‘Lav’ as slang for toilet! I love Lavender, too, and especially the song ‘Lavender Grey’ I would probably use ‘Ven’ as a nickname though.
Angela Says:
I have known girls named “Azure” and “Teal”.
Angela Says:
I have known girls named “Azure” and “Teal”.
And there’s always “Rose”…
Nichole G. Says:
Topaz! I like it better than most of these on the list. Except Gray.
Janine Says:
Indigo is in my top three for a girl. I love colour names!! I met a Rainbow once though and I think that might just be too much…
MissyE Says:
It’s spelled Scarlet. Scarlett has little to do with the color. It’s like nails on chalkboard to see people spell the colour as scarlett. Am I alone here???
I love Roan and Gray.
Joy Says:
Gray is one of my top favorites as a nn for Grady, a family name I’d like to use.
acey Says:
my son’s name is Red Jameson.
taqah Says:
the thing about indigo is that there are all those crazy people convinced their child is “an indigo” –which means they have evolved into some uber (new age) being. (just google indigo children and you’ll see what i mean)
Kate Says:
The worst name I’ve ever come across was a pretty little girl saddled with Turquoise. Turquoise???? Really? Were the parents hoping for an exotic dancer?
Many years ago, Amber was popular. Now Sienna seems to be but it always reminds me of the minivan.
Mimi Says:
I like Lilac, Amethyst, Raven, Ash, Rose, and Sapphire.
Kisha Says:
I have always loved, loved, loved color names- but in another language-especially French.
Noir-Black
Jaune (zhawn)-Yellow.
Bella Says:
My favorite color name is Ivory. I’m seriously thinking of this if my bun in the oven is a baby girl!
corinne Says:

An interesting list! I knew a girl who was Katherine Anne Gray, but I think Gray was more of a surname appropriated as a middle name. I was expecting Violet (which I would use) and Scarlett, but names such as Crimson and Roan seemed interesting…the first one being a name that I liked in theory but wouldn’t use, the second appearing to me as really neat.
