Major League Baseball Names
With the World Series fast approaching and the baseball season coming to a fever pitch, the sports pages are filled with the names of players. Irresistible lists of names. So though I’m far from what anyone would call a dedicated sports fan, I’ve become mesmerized by the rosters of team players’ names. After parsing those of all the major league teams, I have now made my picks of a favorite first name from each–my own personal MVPs. You might like to do the same.
Oh, and a bonus for me–I finally see what’s behind the popularity of the boy’s name Jacoby–probably the last person to know.
Here they are:

ANDERSON Hernandez – New York Mets
AUGIE Ojeda – Arizona Diamondbacks
CHASE Utley – Philadelphia Phillies
COLBY Rasmus – St. Louis Cardinals
DEXTER Fowler – Colorado Rockies
DMITRI Young – Washington Nationals
FERNANDO Perez – Tampa Bay Rays
GIO Gonzalez – Oakland Athletics
JACOBY Ellsbury – Boston Red Sox
JENSEN Lewis – Cleveland Indians
KENDRY Morales – Los Angeles Angels
LUCAS May – Los Angeles Dodgers
MICAH Hoffpauir – Chicago Cubs
OCTAVIO Dotel – Chicago White Sox

ORLANDO Cabrera – Minnesota Twins
OSIRIS Matos – San Francisco Giants

I love alot of these: Casper, Dexter, Felix, Xavier, Roman and Octavio all sound quite modern and fresh to me.

I love this list. More importantly, my husband loves this list. We are having our first child, a boy in about two weeks and my husband’s main contributions to the decision making process are whether or not his son’s name will make a good baseball player’s name in the future. Right now, Homer, Abe, Sullivan, Fisher and Redford (Red) Willams are all in the running. Such a great and timely post!

Jacoby was our first pick for a boy’s name, but alas, we never had one!

My father-in-law’s middle name is Williams, after Ted Williams. And his brother’s middle name is Aaron, for Hank Aaron.

A while ago for a thread about birth notices in your area, I came across an article about a boy named Fenway. (I live in Boston). I can’t find that article anymore, but there is some indication Fenway and also Wrigley are being used by fans for their children, most often in the middle spot. Everyone likes a cute little green monster of their own.
Anyway, as long as Babe or Bucky aren’t being suggested, we’re cool. These are all modern players, but how about (Tom) Seaver?

I love Bronson. When I heard *now* Reds pitcher Bronsons Arroyo’s name when he was on the Red Sox I fell in love with it. I’m going to use it one way or another.

I love this list. My brother and I are named after baseball hall-of-fame members. He is Ty, named after Ty Cobb, and I, Paige, after pitcher Satchel Paige.

What about George Brett? I love the last name for a little boy

Don’t leave out girls!
My daughter’s name is Maris. She’s named after Roger Maris. Future babies will have baseball names too.
Girl Ideas: Paige, Rose, Grace, Gwynn. Boy ideas: Cooper, Nolan, Beckett, Camden.

Fun list!
My daughter’s name is Charis – I think one reason my husband agreed is because I told him it rhymed with Maris!
Other names my husband has put out there – Brett (George Brett), Gehrig (Lou Gehrig, also Curt Schilling’s sons name), Mantle (Mickey Mantle), and Trout because he thought it would be a good name for a left-handed reliever.

Fun list. My husband is constantly suggesting the names of his favorite baseball players for future children. There have been lengthy discussions in our home about the pros and cons of “Derek”, “Constantino”, and “Bernabe.” On a side note, Kiko Calero’s first name is Enrique. “Kiko” is just a nickname.
