Baby names seem to get stranger every day, but what are the weirdest baby name tales of all time?
Crazy baby name stories come from Hollywood and beyond, stem from misguided parents, illogical bureaucracies, and influences beyond human understanding. They involve money, ego, publicity, lawsuits, and the forces of destiny.
Here, the top ten weirdest baby name stories we know.
1. The Family Named George
George Foreman may be multi-dimensional in his professional life, but the championship boxer/food grilling visionary has a one-track mind when it comes to baby names. Foreman named all five of his sons George after himself – they’re George Jr. and Georges III, IV, V and VI — and also named one of his six daughters Georgetta. How does the family tell all those Georges apart? Georges III through VI are called Monk, Big Wheel, Red, and Little Joey.

With over 33,000 baby names on the new national roster – a full 50 percent more than were in common use a quarter century ago – you figure there have to be some weird choices among them. Our friend Brooke Dowd Sacco at KidCrave gathered the 102 weirdest names on the 2011 baby name list, and we cherry-picked the strangest of the strange.

Celebrity Baby Names: What if YOU were a star?
Let’s face it, we all can’t wait to hear the next big celebrity baby names and we all judge them when they’re announced. Are they too outrageous? Too popular? Too bland?
But let’s say the tables were turned and you knew that your baby–and her name–were going to be splashed across the cover of People magazine for all the world to see–and weigh in on. Would you choose a different name from the one you’d pick as a private person?
Would your celebrity self look for a name that would bring your baby–and you–lots of attention? (Hello, Huckleberry.)
Or would you try to be the first to seek and discover some vintage treasure? (such as Agnes, Aurelius)
Or try to fly under the radar with a more ordinary name? (as in Robert Ford Wilson)
Bizarre Baby Names: Do celebs have them in their DNA?
When out-of the-box-named Ever Carradine, actress and member of a multi-generational Hollywood dynasty, recently gave her baby daughter the equally out-of-the-box-name Chaplin, it got me wondering—could there be an extreme baby naming gene that passes from generation to generation?
In Ever’s case it seems to be true. Although her parent’s generation bore the classic names David, Christopher, Keith and Robert, among their offspring are:
Frank Zappa’s kids’ names are the poster children for extreme starbaby naming: Moon Unit, Dweezil (actually Ian Donald Calvin Euclid on his original birth certificate when the hospital refused to register Dweezil), Ahmet Emuukha Rodan and Diva Thin Muffin Pigeen. Are these sibs following the tradition? Kinda–though more cool than crazy– judging from their offspring so far:
Equally well known are the Phoenix (originally Bottom) family of nature names: River Jude, Summer Joy, Rain Joan of Arc, Liberty (originally Libertad Mariposa) and the brother first called Joaquin then Leaf and then Joaquin again. Among their kids’ names:
- Atticus
- Indiana August (Indiana in tribute to uncle River, who played the young Indiana Jones)
- Indigo Orion
- Jonas
- Rio Everest
- Scarlette Jasmine
The widespread progeny of the Mamas and the Papas’ John and Michelle Phillips(together and separately) include children and grandchildren:
And then there’s the Coppola clan, which includes Nicolas (nee Coppola) Cage, with their imaginative choices:
The four acting Baldwin brothers have pretty normal names, but not so some of their offspring:
Legendary Jamaican singer-songwriter Bob (Robert Nesta) Marley had a convoluted family tree, with some eleven children, including Cedella (named for Marley’s mother), David (‘Ziggy’), Rohan and Ki-Mani. Among his interestingly-named grandchildren—although there are probably many more–are:

The fairly normally named ten-strong Wayans brood seems to have a penchant for vowel-ending names for their own kids:
The Jackson 5 + 5 configuration is almost too daunting to look at. For one thing, the Michael Generation names are actually a lot more elaborate than they would appear. “Jackie,” for example, was christened Sigmund Esco, Jr and “Tito” Toriano Adaryll, while Jermaine’s middle name is La Jaune. The baroque (and sometimes immodest) name gene is evident in some of their own child (and grandchild) choices:
