A Few of Our Favorite Names
We try not to play favorites around here, but the truth is that, just like anybody, we have them. And the reasons we love the names we do are as idiosyncratic, irrational, and deeply felt as those of the average citizen. In honor of Nameberry’s new look, we thought it might be time to reveal a few of our personal favorite names and why we adore them. (Floral photo collage by Frances Pelzman)
Nature Names: What are your favorites?
Nature names can mean a lot of different things, as our all-inclusive nature baby names list demonstrates.
There are flower names, long used for girls but newly in style now. These include familiar choices like Rose and Lily along with fashionable exotic blooms such as Dahlia and Magnolia.
Then on the botanical side, there are newer tree names, spice names, and fruit names, from Oak to Sage to Banana.
If Your Partner Named Your Kids….
It was an intriguing question posed over on the forums: What would your children be named, if your partner had complete control?
In my case, my husband would have chosen names from his family tree….very very sleepy names.
Our daughter would be named Molly instead of Rory — Molly Rose. Or maybe Rose Elizabeth, after my husband’s grandmother and mother.
One of our sons would probably have been John and the other one Edward, called Ned. I’m guessing John Richard and Edward Victor. All serviceable choices but…..yawn.
Of course, turn the tables and my husband would say my unedited choices would be unacceptably outrageous. Flora, Otis, and Penn, maybe. Sounds fantastic to me.
Introducing the New Nameberry!
We are thrilled to announce the new, redesigned, and much improved Nameberry, introducing a host of new features now and over the days and weeks to come.
Designed by the fabulous Tedworth & Oscar, aka the British brother team Joe and Jake Baggaley, the new Nameberry is completely responsive, created to look as beautiful and work as seamlessly on your iPhone as it does on your big-screen desktop.
Besides its new mobile capabilities, other changes you’ll notice on Nameberry right away:
– An updated, more sophisticated palette, expanding on our standard pink-and-blue with a range of pastels keyed to different functions.
– A second blog on our home page where we’ll host wonderful guest baby name bloggers (like Eleanor Nickerson of British Baby Names, featured today) along with pregnancy and baby experts.
– Expanded list pages, giving you a snippet of information on all the lists in a category or a bit about every name in the list. Plus the option to view lists old-school, as just a complete array of linked names.
– Simplified name ratings, letting you vote yay, nay, or meh for every name.
Girls’ Names 2013: Our 10 newest choices
We’re always adding new names to Nameberry, and the ten newest on the site all just happen to be for girls.
Half of these names existed on Nameberry before as variations of other names, but without commentary of their own, and the other half are new entries. All have ancient roots though are unusual — yet usable — in modern times.
Our newest girls’ names for 2013:
Adelina is back in the Top 1000 after an absence of nearly a century, thanks to the meteoric rise of her sister name Adeline — along with Adelaide, Adele, and Ada. Some parents choose Adelina because they want to get to cute vintage nickname Addie, but others favor it as a slightly more unusual form of this sweet vintage girls’ name.
