You know you’re a name nerd when half the fun of a new Disney Pixar film is the list of production babies.

I loved every second of the studio’s newest production, Inside Out.

As the credits rolled, I waited patiently. Accounting scrolled by, then Craft Services, until – finally! – the list of 87 children born to Pixar employees during the year Inside Out was finalized and released.

We could talk about Riley, of course, the name of the main character. Between this movie and Steph Curry’s scene-stealing daughter, Riley is having quite the summer. And Amy Poehler, the voice of Joy, is a great namer herself, the mother of Archie and Abel.

But production babies are a special category of names.

Ever since the studio put out their first feature-length film, Toy Story, way back in 1995, they’ve included the list.

The lists are just names – no genders, no sibling names, middles only when more than one child has the same first name. But the names tend to be different, even daring. Exactly what you’d expect from a creative field and especially from such a famously innovative studio.

Before we go any further, it’s time for a shout out to the fabulous Sarah of Names 4 Real. Sarah compiled the names after she heard me lamenting that I hadn’t thought to jot them down.

Let’s talk about some of my favorite names from 2015’s Inside Out, and then look at the full list.

preppie

By Abby Sandel of Appellation Mountain

There’s something about a name that ends with the letter s.

They’re preppy.  Sometimes they sound plural or possessive.  But they’re also fresh.  In our age of Aiden and Asher, we’re not expecting to meet a kiddo with an s ending name.

I’m not necessarily talking about Charles, Linus, Thomas, Marcus, Atticus, or Louis, though some of those names feel very current in 2013.

Choices like Williams, Roberts, and Evans are too close to common first names to exactly fit the style, either.

Instead, I’m thinking of names like the jazzy, literary Miles.  There are more of them than you might guess:

Celebrity Baby Names: From Angelo to Kick

abby--celeb

In the Nameberry 9 this week, Appellation Mountain‘s Abby Sandel touches on several bases–celebrity baby names, when to reveal a name, and elements of style.

A pair of chart-topping singers dominated the baby name news with their name announcements this week.

Shakira issued a good old fashioned birth announcement.

Adele did things differently. She’s kept mum about her new baby boy’s name since his October 2012 arrival, until she was spotted sporting a necklace bearing his name.

Though I always want to know, I respect the right to delay or never make an announcement about your child’s arrival. Except that it seems to backfire. Remember the maelstrom when Tom and Katie declined to release details about Suri?

Or maybe Adele really was indecisive. My son was a few weeks old when I realized I’d overlooked the perfect middle name. Before our daughter arrived, we talked out every aspect of her name – first, middles, nickname – until we were rock solid sure.

I think we can all understand a certain hesitance to share when you’re still trying to make sure you’ve chosen well.

Because it can be tough to decide, can’t it? Does it match your other kids’ names, is it easy to pronounce, have you honored family tradition … No wonder it can take every minute of nine months and beyond to figure it out.
