Category: Baby name disagreements
Recently we asked the Nameberry facebookers (Have you joined yet? Better hurry on over there) to tell us which baby names they’d loved that their partners nixed.
The question prompted a flood of comments, with 65 (and counting) berries weighing in on which beloved names their partners banished from consideration, and why.
Today’s Question of the Week was inspired by a suggestion from anniebee:
What iffy reactions have some of your choices gotten from non-name fans?
Have you ever gotten a quizzical look, a raised eyebrow—or worse—in response to one of your faves, a name known and loved on Nameberry, but which others out there in the nonberry world might never have even heard before—or else find hopelessly old-fashioned?
What is the most extreme reaction you’ve received to your name choice either while you were still considering it or after you had already used it for your child?
What was your response to their response?
Guest blogger Nina Badzin has a name problem, and it’s all her husband’s fault.
You would love my husband, Bryan. He’s the guy who lovingly supports my fiction aspirations, encourages trips to writing conferences, preaches delightfully quaint parenting advice, and gets constant praise on my blog.
Put all that good stuff aside for this post, because now we’re mad at him.
Get this: Bryan has lost faith in my baby naming abilities. MY abilities! Aren‘t I the person whose meanderings about baby names got reprinted on Nameberry and BlogHer? No decent person in his right mind would take away what will likely be my last chance to name a new soul.
ME: I think we should change Elissa‘s name.
HIM: Fine. Let’s do it.
ME: Seriously? She’s two.
The Question of the Week:
Has a favorite name of yours ever been–or tried to be– vetoed by your partner?
How did you handle it? Did you try to convince him or her? Did you win the battle?
Did you start to see the other’s point of view?
Will you try again and bring the same name up again next time around?
