Give it a few weeks – or days – and doubtless we’ll see more traditional names in the mix. Celebrities will call their kiddos Vladimir and Isabetta, and a new fictional character or three will come along with a four-syllable name that seems like the next big thing.
But for the moment, it’s easy to believe that parents are naming for a new world, putting tradition in the past to embrace modern names with relatively limited histories of use.

There’s a lot of buzz in the baby name world right now around the name Atlas. In 2013 Atlas came in at #789, the most popular that this name has ever been in the United States! Atlas is a word name for a book of maps, as well as the name of a Greek God. Actress Anne Heche used the name Atlas for one of her sons. I expect to see this name rise in the coming years.
I know that Hollywood isn’t one great big playdate, with A-list moms and reality starlets alike pushing their designer strollers through the park together. Which is a long way of saying that of course sometimes one set of high-profile parents will choose the same name that some other headline-worthy couple chose.
To spectators, those repeats can seem significant. Tabloids accuse Blake Lively of stealing a Garner-Affleck baby name. We declare names The Next Big Thing if it pops up on lots of celeb birth announcements.
