Saranel Says:
My favorites are Elijah, Sebastian, and Oliver. I’m not sure what category that puts me in.
karabe23 Says:
My favorites are Dexter, Felix, August, Theodore and Etienne- French version of Stephen after my Granddad not sure what my naming style for boy’s is, a bit of everything I guess.
Mischa Says:
Personally, I don’t like to put myself in a box. I think most Nameberries are more “eclectic” in their taste and therefore like many different styles. Therefore, my “style” is the following: Traditional Classic, Ancient Classic, Biblical (there are many wonderful names in the New Testament as well so I’ll use this phrase instead of just Old Testament), Global, Grandpa and Great-Grandpa. I may like the odd one here and there in the other styles but mainly the names I love are in these six categories.
Oldsienna Says:
Hmmm… I’d have to say I’m an eclectic mix of Traditional Classic, Global and (yikes) Hipster. My favourite boys’ names at the moments are Louis, Roscoe, Dominic, Alistair, Daniel, Etienne and Xavier.
GracePheiffer Says:
Grandpa all the way.
Walter, Frank, Otto, Stanley, Harvey, Albert, Frederick.
BasicSand Says:
Unusual would be my choice for names of either sex. If it’s been in the top 1000 for any time past 11 years, I’d rather pass. So my favorites like Edison and Theo don’t make the cut any more since they’re being discovered. I like the following:
Alastair
Barnaby
Dashiell
Gus
Ike
Ned
Orson
Truman
ycw Says:
I like Biblical, moreso old testament and Grandpa/great-grandpa (only the specific relatives, though, don’t know if I always like that style). I can appreciate nature names, traditional classics, ancient classics, and “nameberry names” like Sebastian, Oliver, Genevieve, Imogen, but I wouldn’t use those for my children. I think a style you left out was surnames, which I like only if they’re family names.
My son is Peter Sidney III (biblical/grandfather/”great-grandfather”) FIL’s mn was after his uncle, so that would be the generation.
Likely future choices:
Grandparent:
Ernest, John, Alfred, George; Vincent, James (middle names)
Biblical family names:
Benjamin, Mark, Jesse (I’m Jessica “Jessi”; this would be mn only)
Biblical names:
Asa, Daniel, Hezekiah, Judah, Nehemiah, Obadiah, Silas, Shem, Seth (can you spot the NT name?)
or maybe:
Abraham, Adam, Andrew, Gideon, Jeremiah, Josiah, Japheth, Mephibosheth, Methuselah, Malachi
Natalie Says:
It’s kind of sad, but I don’t know if I even like enough boy names to have a style! I used to really like Landen, before I realized how popular it is… But I guess, if anything, I’m more of a classic person when it comes to boy names. Traditional and ancient are my forte, and lots of the traditional names I like also qualify as grandparent names. Hmm. Luckily, babies are years down the road for me, so I have plenty of time to settle on a boys name that I love.
pam Says:
To me, a lot of you are Quirky Vintage — Dexter, Roscoe, Frederick, Ike, Silas — which is a Very Nameberry style. Probably on a personal level the style that Linda and I each favor!
British American Says:
Traditional classic Grandpa / Great Grandpa names.
Luckily my husband pretty much has the same style.
Lola Says:
I’m incredibly eclectic. My long list is all over the place with Rex, Remy & Rufus topping it, followed by Barnaby, Cassius, Clarence, Cosmo, Arthur, Edward & Caspar. I loves me options!
No labelling me allowed.
Jen Says:
Traditional classic and biblical
Trustedwriter Says:
My dream is to have six or seven children someday – one down, five or six to go! – and I’d want four of them to be boys. Our son is named Charles Theophilus, and I would name his brothers…
Marcus Levi
Adrian Cole
Roger (not sure of middle name)
I think my style is a blend of ancient and grandpa.
annabelle Says:
I think my style for boys is traditional classic mixed with grandpa/great-grandpa… Definitely not too modern! My favorites are Felix, Henry, Lucas, Sebastian, James, Abel, Elliot, Oscar, William… My girls’ taste is much more eclectic, but that list is a lot longer too, so it makes sense. I always struggle to find good boys’ names!
Jenny Says:
Great-Grandpa. I also appreciate Ancient Classic, but I’m never sure how my family would react to something too “fancy”.
The problem, of course, with Great-Grandpa is that you run into a lot of Charlies, Johns and Williams which are still popular enough that I have to throw them out.
Jenna H Says:
I toe the line between vintage/hip. My favorite names are:
Jude
Emmett
Rufus
Miles
Olive
Eliza
Imogen
Violet
However, there is one classic name I LOVE, but I probably won’t use it as a first because of how popular it is: James.
mermuse Says:
I guess I would be Grandpa, since my #1 boys’ name is Arthur! But really, I think that could fit into Ancient Classic, and I think I am sort of an Ancient Classic/Traditional Classic/GreatGrandpa kind of person. I love old names with a bit of dust on them like Edmund, Ferdinand, Laurence, etc.
aimvonb Says:
Depending on the week, I can be all over the place. Right now I’m loving names like Julian, Lucian, Rex and Jesse. We went with the “powerful”
Axl for our son’s name.
Steponme Says:
I think I’m a mix of grandpa and trendy. I just love grandpa and great grandpa names that everyone knows how to pronounce with a fun, trendy nickname. My favorites right now are
Miles (nn Milo)
Simon (nn Sim)
Henry (nn Enzo)
Right now Henry is a touch too popular, but Simon and Miles are safely out of the top 200/100 respectively and that’s good enough for me!
LyndsayJenness Says:
Trendy, Powerboy, Hipster, Great-Grandpa, Family Name. I guess that’s eclectic! I tend to like names that overlap several of these styles, rather than super trendy names and super old fashioned names. Some of my favorites are Finn/Flynn, Hart, Wesley/Westley/Weston “Wes or West”, August “Oz”, Angus “Ace”, Frederick and Vonnoh (family name). I names my son Dashiell “Dash”, so that’s a hipster/powerboy combo
I love a lot of biblical names, like Ezra and Levi. And Traditional names like James and Thomas, but ultimately probably wouldn’t use them myself.
Macy Says:
Unusual, unique, a bit of trendy, androgynous, nature and hipster too.
I dont like most traditional, grandpa or macho-violent names.
tavn Says:
Haha. I’d have to say I fit into the categories of…
Traditional Classic (William, James, Alexander)
Ancient Classic (Lucan)
Old Testament/Biblical (Josiah, Joshua, Levi, Matthias)
Nature (River, Shadow, Asher, Archer, Phoenix)
Grandpa (Arthur)
Hipster (Aeson, Maddox, Zuko, Zane)
I’m much more lenient with boys names than I am with girls names.
rachelmarie Says:
Hmm, my style for boy’s name is still tentative. I tend to love Southern names, surnames as first names, and quirky vintage names. Some of my favorites:
Hartford “Ford”, Dexter “Dex”, and Fletcher “Fletch.” Those are my favorites right now, and I kind of feel my style is all over the place, but I adore Southern sounding names.
Brandie Says:
Of the ones provided in this blog I would have to go with Old-testament as my personal style. Their are just so many really amazing names in the bible that are tried and true without being overdone like Jacob. Some of the best “new” names trend wise are actually thousands of years old and are just now coming back into play or on a loop from the 1800′s.
So my pick is Old-Testament for sure!
Other Carolyn Says:
Is there a non-English Briton category?
I’m a bit more varied with girls names, but most of my boys faves are Welsh, Scottish, or Irish (usually Welsh or Scottish) in origin. I’d have to say my first tier of boy names is sort of obscurely welsh, names like Emrys and Teifion that don’t come up very often in North America and sound distinctive and just a little bit fantastical. My second tier allows some vintagey namse in, though again they’re mostly welsh or scottish names. I would probably have been all over Aidan twenty years ago, before 1/10 boys had a name rhyming with it.
Regi Says:
My two favorite boy names right now are Ransom & Wilder “Rance & Wiley” I guess I like the names that give off a “bad-boy” persona.
daisy Says:
My favorites are Otto, James, Colin, Connor, Grant, Daniel, Dylan, Lleyton, Landon, Henry and Nicholas.
Olivia Says:
I think Mischa has is spot on. I’m eclectic, I suppose – the typical nameberry style! A mix of traditional Classic, Ancient Classic, Biblical, Global, Grandpa and Great-Grandpa.
Nice blog, though.
spotlightstarlit Says:
I call my boy names “Southern Beau, Biblical Rockstar” names. ; )
trich323 Says:
I’m with Other Carolyn! Some of my favorites are Lachlan, Jago, Cormac, and Graeme. And I also love the sound of Aidan but would never use it.
Sarah A Says:
Definitely Old Testament! My favorite boy names are Moses, Solomon, Obadiah, Ishmael, and Hezekiah. DH is on board with Moses and if I allow the nn Obi, he’s on board with Obadiah
I would be all about Isaac and Elijah if they weren’t so darn popular!
Because I’m closely connected to my own name, Sarah, I think I would find it hard to give my child a name not rooted in the OT.
ycw Says:
Lyndsay, Vonnoh is an awesome family name! Hope you get to use that one.
littlebrownpony Says:
I’m a Classic, with a little Old Testament and a little Nouveau mixed in.
Owen, Henry, Truman, Asher, Caleb, Callan, Thomas.
ycw Says:
Sarah A: so glad to “meet” someone else who likes Obadiah and Hezekiah!
If he likes “Obi” for the Star Wars angle, how about “Solo” for Solomon?
Jwalling Says:
I love biblical names–Thaddeus, Gideon, Ezekiel, Silas, Micah. DH loves trendy (or maybe just popular)–Max, Landon, Ethan. We converge at grandpa–we both love Walter, Felix, Floyd.
linzybindi Says:
I think Ancient Classic and family names are more my style. I also really like Celtic/Welsh names for boys.
Perhaps there is a little great-grandpa in there as well.
samjaymc Says:
I’m completely traditional classic! My favourite boys name is James. I also love George, Thomas, William, Edward etc.
anniebee Says:
I’m a combo of trendy last names, classics, and hipster with a dash of British and old man. Actually, a lot of my favorites are on the Yupster list, so I’d squarely define myself as a yupster whether I like it or not.
Sadly, Hudson, which is listed as a trendy name now, is my grandpa’s name. I wanted to use it, but now I’d sound like I was following a trend, which is a HUGE bummer.
Other names I like: Harrison, Sullivan, Theodore, Henry, Oliver, Tate, Jude, Winston and Augustus/Gus.
vaness1 Says:
My favorite boy names are mostly southern-sounding, with some vintage and trendy mixed in. I have no idea what category that puts me in.
I love:
Graham
Davis
Warren
Cash
Miles
Arlo
Rhys
Edison
Finley
Declan
Darius
Emily Says:
I’d say I’m traditional, leaning towards Irish names. Kevin, Patrick, Liam, Ryan…
agirlinred Says:
Some of my favorites are Oliver, Peter, Rupert, William, Simon, Connor, Gideon, Benjamin, Robin, Grover, Quinn, Charlie… Not sure what style that makes me. British?
Sarah A Says:
ycw: Solo for Solomon is an awesome idea, thanks! Yes, DH is definitely into the Star Wars angle:)
Jwalling: Micah is lovely! I know a woman in her early 20s named Micah and I was so disappointed to hear it on a girl. It’s good that you and your husband have found somewhere to meet in the middle. Walter is one of my name crushes that I would never use, and it’s also one of the few names where I love the full name and all nicknames. Wally for a baby, Walt for a teen, and Walter for a distinguished man.
chakrateeze Says:
For both boys and girls I tend to like off-beat classic names, names that have a meaning, but not too overused, such as: Xavier, Vincent, Louis.
A bare bones manly names: Ike, Frank, Jesse. A few select surname names: Gibson, Harris, Lincoln.
A few Biblical: Aaron (my son’s name), Abraham, Josiah, Levi (more so, if it weren’t for you-know-who!).
So, pretty eclectic.
Tracie
chakrateeze Says:
Oh! Totally forgot Declan! I LOVE Declan (Dec), even more so because it’s Elvis Costello’s real name.
(I’m from Memphis, TN
)
Tracie
jpruitt76 Says:
I’m pretty eclectic with my boy name faves as well. I would say the ones I DON’T usually care for are: nature, global, nouveau and trendy.
I definitely have a soft spot for family names and tend towards traditional classics, quirky vintage, ancient classics and some hipster.
My son is Henry. He has his maternal grandmother’s maiden name in his middle name position.
babynamesrule Says:
I guess I’m kind of all over the place? Here are my tops:
Logan-Trendy/Surname
Lachlan-Global
Jackson-Trendy/Surname
Chase-Hipster
William-Classic
Oliver-Classic
Luke-Nickname
babynamesrule Says:
oh, and Benjamin, which is totally a classic too. So I’d say eclectic.
CountryLizB Says:
My current top names are:
George
Edgar
Lionel
Clayton
Reginald
Walter
Arthur
Kermit
Desmond
Howard
Myka Says:
I suppose I would consider myself to have a more modern/nouveau feel when it comes to my name preferences.
I like:
Campbell
Rhett
Reese
Seth
Crawford
Everett
Sawyer
Conall
Spencer
Some of those are considered classics and biblical, I guess. However, my favorite is Rhett and I am not sure how to even go about classifying that name.
Leslie Owen Says:
I’m a combination of Biblical (Jewish), British/Celtic/Welsh, and vintage, I guess. My own son is Thomas, which has been in the family for generations.
Other favourites are George, Edmund, Giles, William, Josiah, Frederick, Louis, Albert, Geraint, Philip, David, Hugh, Alasdair, and Avner.
moondancer Says:
My favourites are:
Andrew, James, Nicholas, Matthew, Michael, Christopher, Dylan. Nathaniel, Simon, Alexander, Riley, Ryan, Miles, Max, Edward, Callum, Timothy, Aiden, Flynn, Archer, Emerson
So there are definitely Traditional Classics plus a few others in the mix, so I consider it to be eclectic!
My brother’s name is Henry and you would not have come across another in a hurry – and now it is so popular – he is 45 this year, way ahead of his time! Likewise with my cousin Theodore, who is 55!
No one in our family would have reckoned on either name becoming so widely used – then or now. Just goes to show…
moxielove Says:
Scandinavian (Finn, Kai/Kaj) and Classic Western (Shane, Jack)
to be paired with a family middle name (Melville. That’s right, you heard me: Melville!)
Stephanie Says:
Classic, family names with a multi-cultural twist. My boys are named Etienne (French version of Stephen) and Laurent (French version of Lawrence) in honour of their great-great-grandpa.
Lizzette Says:
My favorite boy names are:
Joel
Roman
Isaiah
Lenny
Josiah
Dominic
Yandel
Jadiel
Aldo
Lionel
Aurman
Jonniel
& I have 3 months left to pick a baby name, please help me ![]()
whih ones your favorite?
Tori Says:
Hmmm
I tend to love biblical names, my three favourite boys names are Levi, Jacob & Noah which I suspose are trendy as well :/ I also love Josiah, Isaac, Abraham, Moses, Jeremiah. Along with classics like James, Alexander, John, Robert along with grandpa names like Arthur, Felix etc. I also love August and Angelo which I suspose are ancient classics. Generally concerning boys I love biblical names because they’re strong, interesting and dependable.
John Says:
Hi gang.
My wife and I will be naming our boy Borat. We like this alot.
Regards.
steerthestars Says:
I’m totally the nature hippie, when it comes to boys. River, Neptune, Cedar, etc.
TheFutureMrsB Says:
I’m more Biblical: Isaiah, Benjamin, Jeremiah. My fiance is more video game/”bad boy” (I call it silly): Dante, Virgil, Wesker and Marcus/Claymore and Ninja.
cannebella Says:
Mine is completely mixed. I love names like Caleb, Noah, Aiden, Isaac, Ethan and Declan but I also love Breccan, Dexter, Roscoe, Parker, Jax and Elias.
sarahmezz Says:
All over the shop! A mixture of Traditional Classic (James, William), Nature (Frost, River) and Grandpa (Arthur, Henry). I mostly love traditional names, but, for some reason, I like a few quirky ones, too (particularly if they’re nature related). I think I’m a closet hippie.
