2010 Most Popular Names: Charlotte leads nameberry’s Top 100 for girls
Charlotte is the Number 1 for girls among our most popular names 2010, cementing the lead that the royal feminine variation of Charles has held among visitors to our site all year. Our number two and three girls’ names are Violet and Seraphina, both names of the daughters of Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck, which has gone far to popularize them.
Four other names on the nameberry Top 10 for girls have risen steeply through our ranks: They are Eliza, Amelia, Adelaide, and Imogen. Names beginning with vowels count for seven of the girls’ Top 10.
Nameberry’s 2010 most popular names list counts the number of times visitors to our site searched each name throughout the year, which we like to think gives the discerning baby namer an excellent insight into which names are attracting the most buzz.  Of the 4.5 million views our name pages gathered last year, more than 11,000 went to Charlotte alone, making it the most-searched name on the site for either gender.
None of the names in the girls’ Top 10 is among the U.S. ten most popular names. Elizabeth comes the closest, 10 on the nameberry chart and 11 on the U.S. count.
Other girls’ names we see rising most over 2010 and predict will continue to be popular in 2011 are marked with an asterisk, and include Harper, Clementine, Aurora, Leila, and Genevieve.
Check out our 2010 most popular names for boys.

I like almost all of these, however, is anyone else NOT a Seraphina fan? I don’t hate it or anything, but it just feels a little ridiculous to me.
chakrateeze Says:
You site Jennifer Garner and Ben (whom I agree have great taste in baby names) for bringing Seraphina to the fore. But I first heard, and fell in love with it, via Sarafina, Sarafina!, Whoopi Goldberg’s movie about South Africa.

Scrambledmegs Says:
I’m not a Seraphina fan, either. It always feels too long to me.
Lyndsay Says:
Are you referring to a 1992 movie? Pretty sure that’s not the reason the name is being searched thousands of times on nameberry in 2010.
I agree with the others, I don’t see the appeal of Seraphina at all. It seems forced for an average American girl. Ben and Jen’s Seraphina doesn’t fit her name at all, in my opinion.
Sophia Says:
Why is Iris there twice? It’s my all-time favourite name, how depressing it’s the name so nice you used it twice!
SadieSadie Says:
I love that Sadie is up there! All in all a group of beautiful names. I agree that Seraphina sounds a bit much for the average American, but don’t forget the Afflecks aren’t the average Americans and it could have been much much worse!
TracyLeighann Says:
I actually love Seraphina! Based on the Seraphim, the highest order of angels, it could be a way to express thanks for the blessing of a baby. It lends itself to nicknames and can be used formally without embarrassment as an adult.
pam Says:
Ooops, sorry guys on Iris. Bumped up Sarah to Number 100.
Caroline Ruth Says:
How does one pronounce Imogen? Is it Im-o-gon, Im-o-gene, or something else altogether?
Becca Says:
Great list! Aurora is in there twice as well.
SadieSadie Says:
It is pronounced two ways: the brit way (and most beautiful imo) em-ah-jen or the american way im-oh-gene.
Emily Says:
I LOVE this list!!!!! Every name I considered for my second child is on this list. Unfortunatly, he is a boy who still does not have a name! Lol! There are only a couple I don’t like and even less that I hate. NOW FOR THE BOYS LIST! Before my little boy is born nameless!
Caroline Ruth Says:
@ sadiesadie, thanks! I’ve been trying to figure that out for a while!
Lola Says:
I am thrilled to see Josephine & Frances up there! Two names very dear to me. I like a fair number of these but have to say I’m happier still that the names on *my* list don’t show up here (no Jemima, Ottilie or Maud, Huzzah)!
Boys next, I hope?
Also, is it just me that didn’t get thee Nameberry email today? I had to dig up yesterday’s and follow it out from there. If it happens again tomorrow, I’ll have to click through 2 pages to get here!
spotlightstarlit Says:
No Fiona, I’m surprised!
pdxlibrarian Says:
Why do some names have asterisks?
SadieSadie Says:
Lola, I didn’t get one this am, it came 20 minutes ago!
Wildsyringa Says:
pdxlibrarian – From the fifth paragraph: “Other girls’ names we see rising most over 2010 and predict will continue to be popular in 2011 are marked with an asterisk”
Lola Says:
SadieSadie: I got mine wicked late as well, it was time stamped 5:20 too!
It’s happened to me before, one week this summer I got one on Monday and then nothing until Saturday! I hope it never happens again!
Still loving a lot of these, but none more than Josephine & Frances!
Emmy Jo Says:
Most of my favorites are on here — not surprising, as this list is more or less the “top 100 names liked by name enthusiasts.” You have Clara, Celia, and Eleanor — but not Susannah, Gwendolen or Leta. I guess I’m still unique in some respects.
I’m glad to see that Margaret is one of the top climbers. I do hope she starts getting more attention — such a lovely classic and mostly forgotten about nowadays.
pam Says:
Hey everybody, yes, boys tomorrow! Must be a little glitch with the nameberry email — mine has been coming late as well. I asked Hugh our engineer to fix.
Saranel Says:
Aurora is on there twice! We are missing one!
pdxlibrarian Says:
Thanks, Wildsyringa. That clears it up. I’ll read more closely next time!
ycw Says:
Hannah Jane is my daughter, so I’m a fan of both of those.
Elizabeth, Lucy, Rose, Eden, Pearl, and Mary are on my short list; Lily, Grace, and Lydia used to be as well. Ruby and Anna are special names to me. I also love May and Eve, close to some of the top 100–Evangeline is great too, though not a favorite of DH’s. My top pick for my next girl, Rebecca, is not listed, though her middle name would likely be Rose or May.
It occurs to me that the nameberry list does not distinguish beteen first and middle names.
Hayley Says:
Aurora is my numero uno.
@lola, you will be pleased that Kylie isn’t on that list along with Josephine. I love your sons’ names too: Alex and Tim.
What’s Kylie’s middle name and does it come from a bottle of handcream like Josephine’s?

Rachel Says:
I love so many of these names. Cora is at the top of my list.
Aurora is listed twice, btw.
Saranel Says:
Please fix Aurora.
Catie Says:
does anyone know what the * means? It’s next to a few names.
Catie Says:
forget it see now =)
Rikki-Leigh Says:
Why is Quinn getting taken over by girls? It’s one of the few boy names I like!!! Please tell me it’s going to stay a boy name and not be the next Riley or Cameron or Harper. It’s hard enough to find a boy name without girls taking over everything that isn’t Michael or John. Arrrggghhh!

Ah, Piper. Normally, I like more feminine names (such as Rosalie or Emmeline), but lately I’ve just fallen in love with this name (as well as Harper). Great list, by the way
