Love Lily! I actually find Lilian a bit dated/just past its prime and not ready for a comeback, maybe because of the Lilians I know.

I love both. But I do prefer Lillian a little more. She feels more classy and feminine.

    Lillian over Lily

Besides being more "complete", I feel like Lily is too simple in sound, while Lillian isn't overly complicated nor simple as Lily.
You can call Lillian Lily or or you can call Lillian Lill, Lan or Lily or just Lillian where you can invent nicknames for Lily, but it's not the same as having more natural options as nicknames

    Oof, tough call.

With Lillian, the floral association is not nearly as strong, to me. I see Lillian as more of a lady-like vintage revival, fitting in alongside Evelyn and Charlotte.

Lily definitely pops as a floral name, and seems to fit more with shorter, spunkier classic word names like Rose, Grace, and Ruby.

I don't really have a strong preference either way, it would just depend on the feel of the name that I was going for.

I'm biased towards Lillian because she's the main character in my novel. However, I think that Lillian has more opportunities for names, because she can call herself Lily, whereas Lily can't call herself Lillian.

I prefer Lillian! It's elegant, traditional and sweet. I'm crazy about long names and maybe that's the reason I choose Lillian over Lily.
